The Mahabharata is traditionally attributed to the sage Vyasa, also known as Krishna Dvaipayana. He is said to have composed the poem, and then dictated it to the sage Ganesha, who served as his scribe. According to the text itself, Vyasa is a central character in the story of the Mahabharata, and is the grandfather of both the Pandavas and the Kauravas, the two sets of cousins who are the main characters of the epic. He is also said to be the author of the Bhagavad Gita, a famous religious text that is included as a part of the Mahabharata.
Vyasa is considered one of the seven immortals or Chiranjivi's in Hinduism, who is said to still be alive, and will remain alive until the end of present Kali Yuga.
