๐Ÿช” Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu Vedic festival dedicated to ๐’๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฒ๐š ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฏ & ๐‡๐ข๐ฌ ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ, ๐”๐ฌ๐ก๐š & ๐’๐š๐ง๐๐ก๐ฒ๐š in order to thank them for bestowing the bounties of life on earth and to request the granting of certain wishes.

๐Ÿช”The Goddess who is worshipped during the famous Chhath Puja is known as ๐‚๐ก๐ก๐š๐ญ๐ก๐ข ๐Œ๐š๐ข๐ฒ๐š. Chhathi Maiya is known as ๐”๐ฌ๐ก๐š and She is believed to be the beloved younger wife of Surya Dev, the Sun God.

๐Ÿช”In Mithilanchal region She is also worshipped as “๐‘๐š๐ง๐š ๐Œ๐š๐ข”. It is observed by Maithilis, Magahis, Bhojpuris & even Awadhis of India & Nepal.

๐Ÿช” Chhath means Six in Maithili, Magahi & Bhojpuri languages because the main festival occurs after 5 days of Deepavali i.e, the sixth day, hence the name ๐‚๐ก๐ก๐š๐ญ๐ก. Chhath Puja starts from the fourth day of Deepavali & lasts for another four days.

๐Ÿช” People undertake this Vrat for the well being of the family. It is believed that people get their wishes fulfilled, if they observe Chhath Puja.

๐Ÿช”There is a popular belief that worshiping Surya Dev will help in curing diseases like leprosy and also ensure longevity and prosperity of the family. The fast is mainly kept by women, in many places men also join in the ritual and observe fast.

๐Ÿช” ๐๐š๐ก๐š๐ข ๐Š๐ก๐š๐ข ๐Ÿ๐ข๐ซ๐ฌ๐ญ ๐๐š๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‚๐ก๐ก๐š๐ญ๐ก (๐๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ•, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘)
The first day of Chhath is dedicated to cleaning, preparation, and purification and is known as Nahai Khai. Thousands of devotees have an early morning bath in the Ganga River on the day.

๐Ÿช” ๐Š๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ง๐š ๐Ÿ๐š๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฌ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐š๐ฒ (๐๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ–, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘)
Fast or Upvaas begins on the second day and this is referred to as Kharna. The fast is broken after performing a puja at home in the evening.

๐Ÿช”Another round of fasting begins after the prasad is shared. This fast is usually broken on the fourth morning.

๐Ÿช” ๐‚๐ก๐ก๐š๐ญ๐ก ๐’๐š๐ง๐๐ก๐ฒ๐š ๐€๐ซ๐ ๐ก ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐๐š๐ฒ (๐๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘)
A complete fast is observed on the day. On the third day in the evening, Chhath Sandhya Argh is offered.

๐Ÿช”Devotees offer โ€˜๐€๐ซ๐ ๐กโ€™ to setting sun (Surya Dev) along with โ€˜๐’๐จ๐จ๐ฉโ€™ at a pond, seashore or riverbank. In the evening pujas are performed at home and a special puja is done for Agni โ€“ fire God.

๐Ÿช” ๐‚๐ก๐ก๐š๐ญ๐ก ๐’๐จ๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ๐จ๐๐š๐ฒ๐š ๐€๐ซ๐ ๐ก ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ๐ญ๐ก ๐๐š๐ฒ (๐๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‘)
On the fourth morning, Chhath Sooryodaya Argh is performed. Devotees repeat the rituals performed on the third day evening for the rising sun.

๐Ÿช” What is left after offering to Surya Dev is shared as Prasad and the Chhat Puja comes to an end.
