ఒక ఊరి పెద్ద యజ్ఞం చేయు చుండంగా యజ్ఞకుండంలో బంగారం ముద్ద దొరికింది. అది చూసి ఆయన ఆశ్చర్యపోయాడు .
అప్పుడు అతని భార్య కంగారు పడుతూ చెప్పింది ఇలా……!
“నిన్న పొరపాటున యజ్ఞ కుండంలో తాంబూలాన్ని ఉమ్మేశాను. అదే ఈ రోజు బంగారు ముద్ద అయింది.”
అది విన్న ఆ ఊరి పెద్ద కూడా పరీక్షించేందుకు తానూ యజ్ఞ కుండంలో తాంబూలాన్ని ఉమ్మేశాడు.
మరుసటి రోజు మరో బంగారు ముద్ద దొరికింది.
ఈ వార్త ఆనోటా ఈ నోటా పాకింది. అంతే యజ్ఞాలు చేసే బ్రాహ్మణులంతా యజ్ఞ కుండంలో ఊసేశారు. బంగారు ముద్దలు పొందారు. ఒక్క అర్క సోమయాజి అనే అతను తప్ప…..!!
అర్క సోమయాజిని ఆ ఊరివారు కూడా యజ్ఞం లో తంబులాన్ని ఉమ్మమని అడుగుతుండడంతో…..
అందుకు సోమయాజీ “యజ్ఞం పవిత్రమైనది. యజ్ఞ కుండం పవిత్రమైనది. యజ్ఞం చేయడం నా ధర్మం. నా కర్తవ్యం. బంగారు ముద్దలు వచ్చినా బ్రహ్మాండమే బద్దలైనా నేను అందులో ఉమ్మేసే ప్రసక్తే లేదు” అన్నాడాయన.
ఊరు ఊరంతా ధనవంతులయ్యారు. ఒక్క అర్క సోమయాజి తప్ప.
ఆయన భార్యకు మాత్రం తన భర్త చేసే పని నచ్చలేదు.”మనమూ ఉమ్మేద్దాం. బంగారం పొందేద్దాం” అని నచ్చచెప్పుతూ బ్రతిమలాడింది.
అయినా అర్కసోమయాజి ససేమిరా అన్నాడు.
చివరికి ఆమె కోపంతో *పుట్టింటికి పయనమైంది.ఆమెకు నచ్చచెబుతూ అర్క సోమయాజి కూడా ఆమె వెనకే వెళ్లాడు.
ఊరి పొలిమేర దాటాడో లేదో… ఊళ్లో పెద్దగా గొడవలు మొదలయ్యాయి. బంగారం ముద్దల కోసం ఇరుగు పొరుగు వారు కొట్టుకోవడం మొదలైంది. ఇళ్లు కాలిపోతున్నై. మనుషులు చచ్చిపోతున్నారు. మొత్తం ఊరు ఊరు బూడిదైపోయింది.స్మశానంలా తపించింది.ఒక్కరూ మిగలలేదు….!!
అర్క సోమయాజి, ఆయన భార్య తప్ప.
అప్పుడే కలిపురుషుడు వారికి ఎదురు వచ్చాడు.
“ఇన్నాళ్లూ నువ్వున్నావనే ఊరిని వదిలేశా. ఊరు ఊరంతా బంగారం ముద్దల కోసం ధర్మం తప్పినా, నువ్వు, నీ కుటుంబం ధర్మాన్ని పాటించింది. అందుకే నువ్వు ఊళ్లో ఉన్నంత సేపూ ఊరిని ముట్టుకోలేదు. నువ్వు ఊరు వదిలేయగానే నాపనిని నేను చేసి, ధర్మ హీనులను ధ్వంసంచేశాను.” అన్నాడు కలిపురుషుడు.
ఈ మాట విన్న వెంటనే అర్క సోమయాజీ భార్య తన తప్పు తెలుసుకొని తన భర్త పాదాలపై పడి క్షమాపన కోరడం జరిగింది.
