🚩Several Hindu rulers fought the invading forces to avert eradication of the cultural and traditional values of our country.
🚩One such example can be seen from the plunder of the historic Somnath temple by Alauddin Khilji in which two Rajput rulers, Hammir Dev Chauhan of Ranthambore and Kanhad Dev Songara of Jalore
🚩 They joined together to retrieve the Lingam & restored the broken Lingam at several Shiva temples in their kingdoms. Hammir Dev Chauhan was a direct descendant of Prithviraj Chauhan. He was crowned as the ruler of Ranathambore in 1281.
🚩Soon after getting crowned, Hammir raided Mount Abu, Bhimaraspura, Dhar, Vardhanpura, Gadhamandala, Champa, Khandela and Kankaroli. All these raids were successful and Hammir became more powerful and rich after these raids.
🚩In 1290, Jalaludin Khilji the new ruler of Delhi from the Khilji dynasty, attacked Hammir because of his rising power. But he suffered a humiliating defeat in the hands of Hammir. In 1296, Jalaludin was murdered by his nephew Alauddin who wished to become the emperor himself.

🚩In 1297, Allauddin sent an army to plunder Gujarat, under the generalship of Ulugh Khan and Nusrat Khan. When Ulugh Khan asked Kanhad Dev, the then ruler of Jalore, the sanction to march through Jalore to conquer and destroy the temple at Somnath.
🚩 Kanhad Dev refused and denounced Khilji’s actions. Due to the risk of an attack, Ulugh Khan had to take a longer route to Gujarat. In 1299, Ulugh Khan defeated Karandev II of the Vaghela dynasty and destroyed the Somnath temple.
🚩During this destruction, more than 50000 Hindu civilians were massacred mercilessly by the army of Khilji and riches beyond calculation were plundered. Ulugh Khan broke the Jyotirlinga of Somnath into five pieces and decided to take it to the court of Sultan as a gift.
🚩When the news of this plunder reached Kanhad Dev, he decided to retrieve the broken pieces of the Lingam which were being taken to Delhi by attacking the forces of Khilji.
🚩When the forces of Khilji reached near his kingdom, Kanhad Dev along with son Biramdev ambushed the forces and retrieved the pieces of Lingam. The pieces of Lingam were then washed with Gangajal and established in various temples in Jalore.
🚩Muhammad Shah, a neo muslim general in Khilji’s army, helped Kanhad Dev in this war. Neo Muslim generals Muhammad Shah, Kamru, Yalchak and Barq in Khilji’s army attempted to assassinate Ulugh khan because of his cruel massacres of civilians but failed.

🚩Hence Muhammad Shah took refuge at Ranathambore under Hammir. Ulugh Khan went and informed Allauddin about the ambush, who ordered him and Nusrat Khan to conquer Ranathambore. In 1299, they started out with 80,000 cavalry and a large infantry to attack Hammir.
🚩The Muslim governors tried to negotiate with Hammir and demanded for Muhammad Shah’s death, 10,000 gold coins, 300 horses, 4 elephants and the hand of Hammir’s daughter Devaldevi. The terms were rejected. This resulted in a fierce battle.
🚩The forces of Ranathambore fought bravely though being outnumbered greatly and were successful in crushing the attack. Nusrat Khan was killed in the battle but his companion Ulugh Khan eluded and reached Delhi.
🚩Khilji was taken aback by this defeat and wanted revenge. He finally came himself in 1301, and there was a long siege. Hammir was very well prepared and crushed the initial attacks, but famine was a great hurdle to him.

🚩When the fort did not fall after repeated bloody skirmishes, Khilji resorted to diplomacy by taking advantage of dissatisfaction due to famine and won over the confidence of two of Hammir’s generals, Ratipal and Ranmal.
🚩Khilji bribed these two generals of Hammir’s army. Both the generals along with others slipped away and joined Alauddin’s camp. He then attacked Jalore with a huge army of 50000 men after making sure that no help will reach Jalore from Ranathambore because of the famine.
🚩Kanhad Dev with an army of 5,000 men defended Jalore until he and his son Biramdev were both killed. Finally after waiting for the most opportune time, Khilji attacked Ranathambore when the kingdom was severely attacked by famine.

🚩Seeing that defeat was obvious, the women of the kingdom performed Jauhar to escape from humiliation after being captured. Hammir and his forces rode out for battle the next morning after performing Saka (wearing saffron clothes & garlands of Tulsi leaves) one last time.
🚩The forces of Ranathambore though being outnumbered fought valiantly and crushed the front lines of Khilji’s forces. However soon the forces of Ranathambore stumbled in the battle to match the forces of Khilji and were nearing defeat.
🚩In such a critical situation, Hammir’s horse was killed. The brave Agnivansha Rajput surrounded by enemies then took out his bow and his bag of arrows and started killing the mlechchas around him, one with each arrow after uttering the words,
“𝑯𝒆𝒚 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒎𝒃𝒖!! 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒎𝒚 𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖.” Finally after killing all the mlechchas around him and running out of arrows the brave defender of Dharma accepted death with a smile.
🚩After the complete defeat of the Ranathambore forces, Khilji entered the city only to find it empty and hence razed the city to the ground.
🚩 Thus, the valiant efforts of Kanhad Dev Songara and Hammir Dev Chauhan in preserving the traditions of this country from the invasion of foreign forces are sadly ignored by many of our countrymen.
