ఒకూర్లో ఒక రాజుండేటోడు. ఆయనకొక రోజు మూర్ఖులంటే ఎట్లా వుంటారో చూడాలి అనిపించింది. వెంటనే మంత్రిని పిలిపించి “మంత్రీ! మంత్రీ! నాకు మూర్ఖులు ఎట్లా వుంటారో చూడాలని వుంది. నువ్వెట్లాగైనా సరే వచ్చే నెల ఒకటో తేదీ సాయంత్రానికల్లా ఏడుమంది మూర్ఖులని పట్టుకోని నా దగ్గరికి తీస్కోని రావాల” అన్నాడు.

రాజు చెప్పినాక చేయాల గదా… మంత్రి లోపల్లోపల గొణుక్కుంటా మూర్ఖుల కోసం బైలుదేరినాడు. అట్లా వెదుకుతా పోతావుంటే దారిలో ఒకడు చెట్టు కింద ఏందో వెదుకుతా కనబన్నాడు.
మంత్రి వాని దగ్గరికి పోయి “ఏంరా… ఏం పోయింది? ఎందుకు వెదుకుతా వున్నావు” అనడిగినాడు.

దానికి వాడు “నా పెండ్లినాడు మా అత్త పెట్టిన బంగారు ఉంగరం పడిపోయింది. దాని కోసం వెదుకుతా వున్నా” అన్నాడు. అప్పుడా మంత్రి “అట్లాగా! ఉంగరం యాడ పడిపోయింది’ అనడిగినాడు. దానికి వాడు దూరంగా వేలు చూపిస్తా “ఇదిగో అక్కడ ముండ్లకంపల్లేవూ. దాండ్లల్లో పడిపోయింది” అన్నాడు. దానికి మంత్రి ఆచ్చర్యపోతా ఉంగరం అక్కడ ముండ్ల కంపలల్లో పడిపోతే, మరి నువ్వేమి ఇక్కడ చెట్టు కింద వెదుకుతా వున్నావ్’ అనడిగినాడు.

దానికి వాడు కోపంగా “అక్కడంతా ముల్లులు ఎట్లా వున్నాయో చూడు. దానికి తోడు ఎండ సుర్రుమంటోంది. ఆ ఎండలో ముండ్ల మధ్య వెదకడం కన్నా చల్లగా ఈ చెట్టు నీడన వెదకడం మేలు గదా” అన్నాడు.
వస్తువు పోయిన చోట వెదుక్కోకుండా వేరొకచోట వెదుకుతా వున్న వాన్ని చూసి మంత్రి “హమ్మయ్య! ఒక మూర్ఖుడు దొరికినాడు” అని లోపల్లోపల నవ్వుకోని “వచ్చే నెల ఒకటో తేదీ సాయంత్రం రాజభవనానికి రా, రాజుకి నీ తెలివితేటల గురించి చెప్పి ఇంతకంటే మంచి ఉంగరమిప్పిస్తా” అన్నాడు. వాడు సరేనని తలూపినాడు.

మంత్రి ఇంగో మూర్ఖుని కోసం వెదుకుతా పోసాగినాడు. అట్లా పోతా వుంటే ఒకడు నెత్తిన గడ్డిమోపు పెట్టుకోని, గుర్రమ్మీద కూచోని వస్తా కనబడినాడు. అది చూసి మంత్రి అచ్చర్యపోయి “గడ్డిమోపు గుర్రమ్మీద పెట్టుకోని రాకుండా నెత్తిమీద పెట్టుకోని వస్తా వున్నావ్ ఏంది సంగతి” అని అడిగినాడు.

దానికి వాడు “ఏం చెయ్యమంటావ్ మహామంత్రీ! గుర్రం ముసలిదయిపోయింది. నన్ను మోయడానికే దానికి శక్తి లేదు. ఇంక గడ్డిమోపునేం మోస్తాది. అందుకే దాని మీద బరువు పెట్టకుండా నేనే గడ్డిమోపు మోస్తా వున్నా” అన్నాడు.

గడ్డిమోపు నెత్తి మీద పెట్టుకున్నా గుర్రమ్మీద పెట్టుకున్నా ఒకటే అని తెలియని వాడి మూర్ఖత్వానికి మంత్రి ఆచ్చర్యపోయి హమ్మయ్య మరో మూర్ఖుడు దొరికినాడని లోపల్లోపల నవ్వుకోని “వచ్చేనెల ఒకటో తేదీ సాయంత్రం రాజభవనానికి రా, నీ మంచితనం గురించి చెప్పి రాజుతో మంచి బహుమానమిప్పిస్తా” అన్నాడు. వాడు సరే అని తలూపినాడు.

మంత్రి మూడో మూర్ఖుని కోసం వెదుకుతా పోసాగినాడు. అట్లా పోతావుంటే ఒకరోజు ఒకచోట ఇద్దరు కిందా మీదా పడి కొట్టుకుంటా కనబన్నారు. అది చూసి మంత్రి వురుక్కుంటా పోయి వాళ్ళిద్దరినీ విడిపిచ్చి “ఎందుకట్లా కొట్లాడుకుంటా వున్నారు? ఏంది మీ బాధ” అనడిగినాడు.
దానికి ఒకడు కోపంగా “చూడు మంత్రీ! వీడు నా బంగారంలాంటి ఆవును చంపుతానంటున్నాడు” అన్నాడు. మంత్రి రెండోవానివైపు చూసేసరికి వాడు కోపంగా “ఆ దొంగ సచ్చినేది నా తోటంతా తిని పాడు చేస్తావుంటే ఎట్లా వూరుకునేది. అందుకే చంపుతానంటున్నా” అన్నాడు.
మంత్రి కాసేపాలోచించి “ఇంతకీ నీ తోట యాడుంది” అన్నాడు. దానికి వాడు “తోటనా ఇంగా ఎయ్యలేదు గదా” అన్నాడు.

మంత్రి ఐదో మూర్ఖుని కోసం వెదుకుతా పోసాగినాడు. అట్లా పోతావుంటే ఒకచోట ఒకడు ఏడుస్తా ఆకాశం కేసి చూస్తా కనబడినాడు. మంత్రి వాన్ని చూసి “ఎందుకట్లా ఆకాశంలో వెదుకుతా ఏడుస్తా వున్నావు? ఏంది నీ బాధ” అనడిగినాడు.

దానికి వాడు ఏడుస్తా “ఏం చెప్పమంటావు మహామంత్రీ! పోయిన్నెల నా మిత్రుడొకడు తీర్థయాత్రలకని పోతా పోతా దాచి పెట్టమని ఒక చెంబు నిండా బంగారు వరహాలిచ్చి పోయినాడు. రాత్రిపూట ఏ దొంగలో వస్తే కష్టంగదా… అందుకని అర్ధరాత్రి ఎవరూ చూడకుండా ఈ అడవిలో ఒక గుంత తీసి దాచిపెట్టినా. యాడ దాచిపెట్టినామో గుర్తు పెట్టుకోవాల గదా, అంతా వెతికితే సరిగ్గా గుంత పైన్నే ఒక నల్లమేఘం పెద్దది కనబడింది. దాన్ని గుర్తు పెట్టుకున్నా. నా మిత్రుడు వచ్చేది రేపే. వాని చెంబు వానికిద్దామని ఈడికొచ్చి చూస్తే ఆ మేఘం యాడా కనబడ్డం లేదు. ఎవడో వరహాలతో బాటు మేఘాన్ని గూడా ఎత్తుకొని పోయినట్టున్నాడు. అందుకే యాడన్నా కనబడతాదేమోనని వెదుకుతా వున్నా” అన్నాడు.

ఆ మాట విన్న మంత్రి “ఎవడైనా గాలికి చెదిరిపోయే మేఘాన్ని గుర్తు పెట్టుకుంటాడా మూర్ఖుడు కాకపోతే” అని లోపల్లోపల నవ్వుకోని “వచ్చే నెల ఒకటో తేదీ సాయంత్రం రాజభవనానికి రా, రాజుకి చెప్పి నీ చెంబూ, బంగారం నీకిప్పిస్తా” అన్నాడు. వాడు సరేనని తలూపినాడు.
ఒకటో తేదీ సాయంత్రానికి వాళ్ళంతా రాజభవనానికి చేరుకున్నారు. మంత్రి వాళ్ళు చేసిన పనులన్నీ ఒకొక్కటే వివరించి చెబుతా వుంటే రాజు వాళ్ళ మూర్ఖత్వానికి కిందామీదా పడి నవ్వినాడు.

ఆ తర్వాత రాజు వాళ్ళందరినీ లెక్కబెట్టి “అవునూ… నేను ఏడుమంది మూర్ఖులను తెమ్మంటే… నువ్వేంది. ఐదుమందినే పట్టుకోనొచ్చినావు” అనడిగినాడు.

దానికి మంత్రి “నువ్వేమీ అననని మాటిస్తే మిగతా ఆ ఇద్దరిని కూడా చూపిస్తా రాజా” అన్నాడు. సరేనని రాజు మాటిచ్చినాడు.

అప్పుడు మంత్రి “ఆ మిగతా ఇద్దరూ ఎవరో కాదు మహారాజా! నువ్వూ, నేనూ” అన్నాడు. దానికి రాజు ఆచ్చర్యపోతూ “మనిద్దరమా? అదెట్లా” అన్నాడు.

అప్పుడు మంత్రి “చూడు రాజా! ఈ దేశాన్ని పరిపాలించాల్సింది నువ్వూ నేనే గదా. మనం ప్రజల గురించి, వాళ్ళ బాగోగుల గురించి ఆలోచించాల గానీ ఇట్లా మూర్ఖుల గురించి ఆలోచిస్తే ఎట్లా? నెలరోజులపాటు పరిపాలన గాలికి వదిలేసి మూర్ఖులను పట్టుకొని రమ్మన్న నువ్వొక మూర్ఖునివి. నువ్వు అట్లా చెప్పడం ఆలస్యం మారు మాట్లాడకుండా సరేనంటూ అన్నీ వదిలేసి బైలుదేరిన నేనొక మూర్ఖున్ని నిజమా కాదా” అన్నాడు.

ఆ మాటలకు తప్పు తెలుసుకున్న రాజు చిరునవ్వుతో మంత్రి భుజం తట్టి మెచ్చుకున్నాడు.
