Ansari was in jail from 2005 in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab states for one or the other criminal case. In April 2023, he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for killing BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai by an MP MLA court.[27] Mukhtar Ansari was handed a life sentence on 13 March 2024 in connection with a fake arms licence case

Death
Ansari died from a heart attack on 28 March 2024, at the age of 60 years. His Son Umar Ansari has claimed that his father was given a slow poison that lead to the heart attack.

Interestingly, on 19th March 2024 i.e., 10 days before his death, Mukhtar Ansari had told Barabanki court that he has been given some poisonous substance in the food due to which his nerves and limbs have continous pain.[34] The Uttar Pradesh government ordered a 3 member magestrial investigation into the allegations.

Who is Mukhtar Ansari

Alka Rai, the wife of Krishnanand Rai, former MLA who was killed by Mukhtar Ansari, said her family can now celebrate Holi after 19 years.

Rai defeated Afzal Ansari, brother of Mukhtar Ansari, in 2002 from the Mohammadabad constituency in Ghazipur. This wounded the ego of the Ansari brothers, and they decided to eliminate Rai.

He was murdered in 2005. He had been made aware of a death threat by STF, who warned him of hired killers by Mukhtar Ansari. He was coaxed to attend a cricket match as the chief guest at his native village and was persuaded not to use his bullet-proof vehicle. He was ambushed on his way back home by assailants who used automatic rifles and fired 500 rounds. Seven people died in total. One of the killers cut his Shikha and kept in his pocket like a winning trophy.

Huge political outrage erupted. Mukhtar threatened that his name be dropped from the case, or he would topple the Samajvadi govt, then surviving on the fragile support of several coalition partners. It worked. Officers were manipulated, transferred, made to resign, witnesses were also killed.

Finding no remedy, his wife filed a writ in the Allahabad HC demanding a CBI inquiry. The Court ordered a CBI inquiry in May 2006. Ansari was arrested in 2010 but enjoyed all sorts of lavish treatment. His bad time started since Yogi Adityanath took over as the CM of UP.
