What is DIGIPIN Digital Postal Index Number
What is DIGIPIN?
DIGIPIN stands for Digital Postal Index Number – a geospatial reference system developed by the Department of Posts, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO’s NRSC.
DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is an open-source, geo-coded addressing system developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), ISRO. It assigns a unique 10-character alphanumeric code to every 4×4 meter grid across India, based on precise latitude and longitude coordinates. Unlike traditional PIN codes that cover broad areas, DIGIPIN pinpoints exact locations, enhancing accuracy for services like e-commerce deliveries, emergency responses, and logistics.
Key Features:
Precision: Identifies locations within a 4m x 4m grid.
Privacy: No personal data is stored; codes are purely location-based.
Offline Use: Works offline with publicly available code for encoding/decoding.
Applications: Supports logistics, emergency services, e-commerce, and geospatial governance.
Integration: Aligns with the National Geospatial Policy 2022 and can be integrated into GIS applications.
How to Get Your DIGIPIN:
DIGIPINS of adjacent houses are not sequential. Usually, neighbourhood enquiry is the practice especially for those with limited digital access. With adjacent houses not having a sequential DIGIPIN, how does it ease? Illustration attached.
Visit the “Know Your DIGIPIN” portal at https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home.
Use a GNSS-enabled device to input or detect your location’s latitude and longitude.
The system generates a unique 10-character code for your location.

Does It Replace PIN Codes?
No, DIGIPIN complements the existing 6-digit PIN code system, adding a layer of precision without replacing traditional addresses. It’s part of the DHRUVA initiative for standardized, interoperable digital addressing, offering “Address as a Service” (AaaS).
Benefits:
Simplifies addressing in rural or unstructured areas (e.g., remote villages, maritime zones).
Improves last-mile delivery and emergency response times.
Supports cross-sector services like banking, governance, and disaster management.
