శివాలయంలో ఏ విధంగా ప్రదక్షిణ చేయాలో, అలా చేయడం వల్ల ఎలాంటి ఫలితాలు పొందవచ్చో పురాణాల్లో స్పష్టంగా ఉన్నాయి.
శివాలయంలో ధ్వజస్తంభం దగ్గర నుండి మనకి ఎడమపక్కగా బయలుదేరి గర్భాలయానికి వెనుకనున్న సోమసూత్రం (శివుని అభిషేకజలం బయటకు పోయే మార్గం) వరకు వెళ్లి వెనుతిరగాలి. కాని సోమసూత్రం దాటకూడదు.
ఇలా చేస్తే ఒక ప్రదక్షిణ పూర్తి చేసినట్లు. ఈ విధమైన ప్రదక్షిణలు శివుడికి భక్తులు తమ శక్త్యానుసారం బేసి సంఖ్యలో 3, 5, 7, 9 వచ్చే విధంగా చేయవచ్చు.
శివప్రదక్షిణంలో సోమ సూత్రాన్ని దాటరాదన్నది ప్రధాన నియమం. అలాచేస్తే ఎన్ని ప్రదక్షిణలు చేసినా ఒక ప్రదక్షిణ కిందకే వస్తుందంటారు.
