Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (1836-1886), a 19th-century saint, was the founder of the Ramakrishna Order of Monks and is regarded as the spiritual founder of the Ramakrishna Movement.
Shri Ramakrishna was born as Gadadhar Chattopadhyaya in a poor Brahmana family of the village, called Kamarpukur in Bengal, on the 18th of February 1836. He later came to be known as Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.
His father Khudiram Chatterjee was a man of great piety and uprightness of character. His mother Chandramani Devi too was a paragon of womanly virtues. He was the pujari of Dakshineswar Kali Temple.
This temple was built by Rani Rashmoni, a devotee of Maa Kali in 1855 in Kolkata in the eastern ghats of the Hooghly river after she had a divine vision of the Goddess. Rani Rashmoni appointed Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa as the pujari of the shrine.
He attracted several monastic and householder disciples. His education did not proceed beyond the elementary stage, and he had no formal education in philosophy and Shastras. He dedicated his life to God. He was a devotee of Goddess Kali.
Ramakrishna Paramhansa was married to Sarada Devi, who was also his spiritual partner. Ramakrishnaโs parents, before he was born, had divine visions.
While his father Khudiram saw Gadadhara, another name of Vishnu, telling him in his dream that He would be born as his son, his mother Chandramani Devi had a vision of light entering her womb from a Shivalinga.
Ramakrishna experienced his first spiritual trance at the age of six. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa was well-versed in the ancient scriptures including the Ramayana, Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita, and the Puranas.
Narendra Nath Datta (1863-1902) later known as Swami Vivekananda was the most devoted pupil of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa who carried the message of his Guru Ramakrishna all over the world, especially in America and Europe.
