అమృతము కొరకు దేవతలు రాక్షసులు కలిసి క్షీరసాగారమును, మంధర పర్వతమును కవ్వముగా చేసి వాసుకి అను సర్పమును తాడుగా చేసి మధించు సమయమున ముందుగా ఉద్భవించిన హాలహలమును గాంచి భయబ్రాంతులై అందరూ పరుగులు తీస్తుండగా, అది చూసిన పరమేశ్వరుడు హాలహలమును మ్రింగి ఆ వేడిని తట్టుకోలేక తన కంఠమందు బందించి గరళకంఠుడై వెడలెను. అందులకు సంతోషించిన దేవదానమవులు మరల క్షీరసాగారమును మధించగా అమృతభాండము లభించినది, ఆ అమృతమును గూర్చి దేవదానవులు వాదులాడు కొనుచు యుద్ధమునకు సిద్ధము కాగా, జగన్మాత ఆదేశము మేరకు శ్రీ మహావిష్ణువు అతిలోకసౌందర్యవంతురాలైన జగన్మోహిని అవతారమున ప్రత్యక్షమై రాక్షసులను మాయా మోహంబున బంధించి అమృత భాండమును దేవతల కందించి వెడలుచుండగా, ఆ అతిలోకసుందరి మోహిని రూపలావణ్యమును గాంచిన పరమేశ్వరుడు జగన్మాయలీలలను గ్రహించిన వాడై మోహము నొందెను.
మోహిని గాఢoగా వయ్యారము ఒలకబోసి పరమేశ్వరుని గాంచి అధమరిచి కవ్వించెను. అంత ఆ హరిహరుల గాఢపరిష్వంగంలో జాలువారిన శ్వేత బిందువుల కలయిక వలన నల్లని శరీరఛాయతో ఉగ్రరూపధారియై ఉద్భవించిన కుమారుడు జన్మించెను. అది తెలుసుకున్న చతుర్ముఖుడు బ్రహ్మదేవుడు ఆ పసిబాలునికి హరిహరసుతుడను నామకరణము చేసెను.తల్లి అయిన మోహిని (శ్రీహరి) తన కంఠమందున్ను మనిహారమును తీసి బాలుని మెడలో వేసి మణికంఠుడని, తండ్రి అయిన పరమేశ్వరుడు సకల భూతాలపైన ఆధిపత్యమును ప్రసాదించి భూతనాధుడని పిలిచారు. శివకేశవుల తత్వమున ఉత్భవించిన హరిహరసుతుడు సర్వధర్మములను శాసించుచూ ధర్మశాస్తాగా ఖ్యాతి గడించెను.
అలా అండగా మహిషాసురిని అకృత్యాలను భరించలేని దేవతలు జగన్మాతను శరణు వేడిరి. ఆ తల్లి ఆశిర్వాదముతో శ్రీలక్ష్మీ, సరస్వతి, పార్వతి దేవేరుల నుండి ఉద్భవించిన శక్తి స్వరూపిణి దుర్గాదేవి మహిషాసురుడనే రాక్షసుని సంహరించెను. తన సోదరుని మరణవార్త విని భరించలేని మహిషి ప్రతీకారము తీర్చుకొనుటకై ముల్లోకములను అల్లకల్లోలము చేయుటకు నిశ్చయించుకొని తనకు మరణము లేని వరము పొందుటకు బ్రహ్మదేవుని గురించి ఘోరమైన తపస్సు చేసెను. మహిషి తపస్సుకు మెచ్చిన బ్రహ్మ ప్రత్యక్షమై నీ కోరికను తెలియజేయమనగా, మహిషి తనకు చావులేని వరమును ప్రసాదించమనెను. అందులకు బ్రహ్మదేవుడు నీ కోరిక సమంజసమైనది కాదు అది ఆ హరిహరాదులకు కూడా సాధ్యము కాదని తిరస్కరించగా, అందులకు మహిషి చింతించకుండా ఆ హరిహరులకు కుడా సాధ్యపడదని మీరే సెలవిస్తిరి కాన వారిద్దరికి జన్మించిన మానవుడు భూలోకములో నాపై జయించునట్లుగా వరమడిగెను.అందుకు సమ్మతించిన బ్రహ్మదేవుడు సరే అని వరమిచ్చెను.
అంత ఆ మహిషి హరిహరులకు సంగమముతో బాలుడు జన్మించునా! జన్మించినను భూలోకమందు ఎలా జన్మించును! అది ఎలా సాధ్యమగును? అయినను ఇద్దరు పురుషులకు శిశువు ఎలా పుడతాడు? అయినా నేను ఈ లోకముము వదిలి నేనెలా భూలోకమునకు వెల్లుదుననే అజ్ఞాతముతో మహిషి ముల్లోకములను అల్లకల్లోలము చేయసాగెను. మహిషి పెట్టె బాధలు భరించలేని దేవతలు, దేవేంద్రునీతో కలిసి పరమశివుని వద్దకు వెళ్లి వారి బాధలను చెప్పుకొనిరి. వారి మొర ఆలకించిన పరమేశ్వరుడు భూలోకమున జన్మించమని భూతనాధునికి ఆజ్ఞాపించెను. తండ్రి మాటలను శిరోధార్యముగా భావించిన భూతనాధుడు సమ్మతించెను. ఇంతలో మహిషి ఆగడాలను అరికట్టేందుకు మన్మధుని ప్రయోగించి మన్మధ బాణాలను వదిలి మహిషిని మొహపరవశము చేశాడు, అలానే దత్తాత్రేయుడు కూడా మగ మహిషముగా మారి కామవాంఛలకు లోబడ్డ మహిషిని లోబరచి భూలోకమందున్న అలుదానది తీరమునకు తీసుకొని పోయి కామకేళి విలాసముతో మైమరపించుచుండెను.
కేరళదేశము నందు పందళ రాజ్యమును పరిపాలించు రాజశేఖర పాండ్యుడనే రాజు ఉండేవాడు, అతడు పరమ శివభక్తుడు, ఆయన భార్యా సాధ్వీమణి కూడా శ్రీ మహావిష్ణు భక్తురాలు, అయినా వారికి చాలాకాలము వరకు సంతానము కలుగలేదు. అందుకోసం ఆ దంపతులు నిరాశ చెందకుండా ఎన్నో నోములు, వ్రతములు, పూజలను జరిపించిన సంతానము కలుగలేదని బాధపడక భగవంతుని పూజలు మాత్రము మానలేదు. ఒకనాడు రాజశేఖర పాండ్యుడు పంబానదీ తీర అడవి ప్రాంతములోని క్రూరమృగముల బాధపడలేక తన పరివారమును వెంటబెట్టుకొని వేటకు వెళ్ళాడు, అంతలో పంబానదీ తీరమున సర్పము నీడన పవళించి ఏడుస్తున్న బాలుని గాంచినంతనే అబ్బురపడి ఆనందముగా బాలుని ఎత్తుకుని ఈయన ఆ భగవంతుని వర ప్రసాదముగా భావించి, ఆ బాలుని గొనివచ్చి మహారాణికి అందించెను. ఆమె మహా ఆనందముగా బాలుని ఎత్తుకుని అక్కున చేర్చుకొని ఆనందపరవశురాలైనది. ఆ బాలుని కంఠమున మనిహారము దివ్యకాంతులు వెదజల్లుతున్న ఆ బాలుని మణికంఠుడని నామకరణము చేసి ఆ దంపతులు అల్లారుముద్దుగా పెంచుకొనుచున్నారు.
ఆ మణికంఠుడు అడుగు పెట్టిన మహత్యమో ఏమో కాని మొత్తానికి పందల రాజ్యము సుభీక్షముగా నుండెను. అంతనే కాక పందళరాణి కూడా గర్భము దాల్చి ఒక కుమారున్ని ప్రసవించెను. వారి ఆనందములకు అవధులు లేకుండెను. మణికంఠునికి అయిదవ ఏట రాగానే అక్షరాభ్యాసము గావించి విద్యాభ్యాసమునకు గురుకుల ఆశ్రమమునకు పంపిరి. అక్కడ మణికంఠుడు అనతికాలములోనే సకల విద్యలు అభ్యసించి సకల శాస్త్రపారంగతుడై గురుదక్షిణగా గురుపుత్రునికి మాటను మరియు దృష్టిని ప్రసాదించెను.ఇంతలో ప్రజలను భయభ్రాంతులు చేస్తున్న వావరు అను బందిపోటు దొంగను ఎదుర్కొని అతనిని మణికంఠుడు ఓడించి తన భక్తునిగా మార్చి స్నేహితునిగా చేసుకొనెను.
