జనకుడు వశిష్టుల వారిని గాంచి *” ముని శ్రేష్ఠ ! యీ అజా మీళుడు యెవడు ? వాడి పూర్వ జన్మ మెటువంటిది ? పూర్వ జన్మంబున నెట్టి పాపములు చేసియుండెను ? ఇప్పడీ విష్ణు దూతలు వైకుంటమునకు తీసుకొనిపోయిన తరువాత నేమి జరిగెను ?
వివరించ వలసినది “* గా ప్రార్ధించెను. అంత నా మునిశ్రేష్టుడు జనక మహారాజును గాంచి యిట్లు పలికెను.
జనకా ! అజా మీళుని విష్ణు దూతలు వైకంఠమునకు తీసుకొనిపోయిన తరువాత యమ కింకరులు తమ ప్రభువగు యమ ధర్మరాజు కడ కేగి , *” ప్రభూ ! తమ అజ్ఞ ప్రకారము అజా మీళుని తీసుకొని వచ్చుటకు వెళ్ళగా అచ్చటకు విష్ణు దూతలు కూడా వచ్చి మాతో వాదించి అజామీళుని విమాన మెక్కించి వైకుంఠమునకు తీసుకొని పోయిరి.
మేము చేయునది లేక చాల విచారించుచూ యిచటకు వచ్చినారము’* అని భయ కంపితులై విన్నవించు కొనిరి. *”జా రా ! ఎంత పని జరిగెను ?
ఎప్పుడూ ఇట్టి విధముగా జరిగి యుండలేదే ? దీనికి బలమైన కారణము ఏదైనా వుండి యుండవచ్చును”* అని యముడు తన దివ్య దృష్టితో అజా మీళుని పూర్వ జన్మ వృత్తాంతము తెలుసుకొని *
” ఓహొ ! అది యా సంగతి ! తన అవ సాన కాలమున ” నారాయణ” అని వైకంఠవాసుని స్మరణ జేసి యుండెను. అందులకు గాను విష్ణు దూతలు వచ్చి వానిని తీసుకొని పోయిరి.
తెలిసి గాని , తెలియక గాని మృత్యువు సమయమున హరి నామస్మరణ మెవరు చేయుదురో వారికి వైకుంఠ ప్రాప్తి తప్పక కలుగును. గనుక , అజా మీళునకు వైకుంఠ ప్రాప్తి కలిగెను కదా !”* అని అనుకొనెను. అజా మీళుడు పూర్వ జన్మలో మహారాష్ట్ర దేశమున ఒకానొక శివాలయములో అర్చకుడుగా నుండెను.
అతడు అపురూపమైన అందంచేతను , సిరి సంపదల చేతను , బలము చేతను గర్విష్టి యై శివారాధన చేయక , శివాలయము యొక్క ధనము నపహరించుచు , శివుని విగ్రహము వద్ద ధూప దీప నైవేద్యములను బెట్టక , దుష్ట సహవసములను మరిగి విచ్చలవిడిగా తిరుగు చుండెడి వాడు. ఒక్కొక్కప్పుడు శివాలయములో పరమేశ్వరుని కెదురుగా పాదములుంచి పరుండెడి వాడు.
ఇతని కొక బిద బ్రాహ్మణ స్త్రీ తో రహస్య సంబంద ముండెడిది. ఆమె కూడా అందమైనదగుటచే చేయునది లేక ఆమె భర్త చూచియు చూడ నటుల నుండి భిక్షాటనకై వురూరా తిరుగుచూ ఏదో వేళకు యింటికి వచ్చి కాలం గడుపుచుండెడివాడు. ఒకనాడు పొరుగూరికి వెళ్లి యాచన చేసి పెద్ద మూటతో బియ్యము కూరలు నెత్తిని బెట్టుకొని వచ్చి అలిసిపోయి *
” నాకు యీ రోజున ఆకలి మిక్కుటముగా నున్నది త్వరగా వంట చేసి పెట్టుము”,

* అని భార్యతో ననెను. అందులకామె చిదరించుకోనుచు , నిర్లక్ష్యముతో కాళ్ళు కడుగుకొనుటకు నీళ్లు కూడా యీయక , అతని వంక కన్నెత్తి యైననూ చూడక విటునిపై మనస్సు గలదియై మగని తూలనాడుట వలన భర్తకు కోపం వచ్చి పక్కనున్న కఱ్ఱతో బదెను. అంత ఆమె భర్త చెతి నుండి కఱ్ఱ లాగు కొని భర్తను రెండితలు కొట్టి బైటకు త్రోసి తలుపులు మూసివేసెను.
అతడు చేయునది లేక భార్యపై విసుగు జనించుట వలన ఇక యింటి ముఖము పట్ట రాదని తలపోసి దేశాటనకు వెడలిపోయెను.
భర్త యింటి నుండి వెడలి పోయెను కదా యని సంతోషించి , ఆమె ఆ రాత్రి బాగా ముస్తాబై వీధి అరుగు పై కూర్చుండి యుండగా ఒక చాకలి వాడు ఆ దారిని పోవుచుండెను. అతనిని పిలిచి *
” ఓయీ ! నీవి రాత్రి నాతో రతి క్రీడ సలుపుటకు రమ్మని కొరెను.
అంత నా చాకలి *
” తల్లి ! నీవు బ్రాహ్మణ పడతివి. నేను నిచాకులస్తుడును , చాకలి వాడిని మిరీ విధముగ పిలుచుట యుక్తము గాదు. నేనేట్టి పాపపు పని చేయజాలను”* అని బుద్ది చెప్పి వెడలి పోయెను.
ఆమె ఆ చాకలి వాణి అమాయకత్వమునకు లోలోన నవ్వుకొని అచ్చటనుండి బయలుదేరి ఆ గ్రామ శివర్చకుని కడకేగి తన కామవాంఛ తీర్చమని పరి పరి విధముల బ్రతిమాలి ఆ రాత్రంతయు అతనితో గడిపి వుదయమున యింటికి వచ్చి *
” అయ్యో ! నే నెంతటి పాపమునకు ఒడి గట్టితిని ? అగ్ని సాక్షిగా పెండ్లాడిన భర్తను యింటి నుండి వెడలగొట్టి క్షణికమయిననకామవాంఛకు లోనయి మహాపరాధము చేసితిని”
* అని పాశ్చాత్తాపమొంది , ఒక కూలి వానిని పిలిపించి కొంత ధనమిచ్చి తన భర్తకు వెదికి తీసుకు రావలసినదిగ పంపెను.
కొన్ని దినములు గడిచిన తర్వాత భర్త యింటికి రాగా పాదముల పై బడి తన తప్పులను క్షమించమని ప్రార్ధించెను. అప్పటి నుండి మంచి నడవడిక నవలంబించి భర్త అనురాగమునకు పాత్రురాలయ్యెను. కొంత కాలమునకు శివర్చకునకు నేదియో వ్యాధి సంక్రమించి దిన దినము క్షీణించుచు మరణించెను.
అతడు రౌర వాది నరక కుపముల బడి నానా బాధలు పొంది మరల నానా జన్మ మెత్తి సత్య వ్రాతుడను బ్రాహ్మణో త్తమునకు కుమారుడై కార్తీక మాసమున నది స్నానము చేసి దేవత దర్శనము చేసి యుండుట వలన నేడు జన్మముల పాపములు నశించుట చేత అజా మీళుడై పుట్టెను. ఎప్పటికి తన అవసాన కాలమున *
‘నారాయణా’* అని శ్రీ హరిని స్మరించుట వలన వైకుంఠమునకు పోయెను. బ్రాహ్మణుని భార్యయగు ఆ కామిని కూడా రోగ గ్రస్తురాలై చనిపోయెను. అనేక యమ యాతనలన నుభవించి ఒక మల వాని యింట జన్మించెను. ఆ మాలవాడు ఆ పిల్ల జన్మ రాశి చూపించగా తండ్రి గండమున పుట్టినదని జ్యోతిష్కుడు చెప్పెను. మాల వాడు శిశువును తీసుకొనిపోయి అడవి యందు వదిలిపెట్టేను.

అంతలో నొక విప్రుడు ఆ దారిన పోవుచు పిల్ల యేడుపు విని జాలి కలిగి తీసుకొని పోయి తన యింట దాసికిచ్చి పోషించెను. ఆ బాలికనే అజామీళుడు ప్రేమించెను. వారి పూర్వ జన్మ వృత్తాంత మిదియే.
నిర్మల మైన మనస్సుతో శ్రీ హరిని ధ్యానించుట , దాన ధర్మములు , శ్రీ హరి కథలను ఆలకించుట , కార్తిక మాస స్నాన ప్రభావముల వలన నెటువంటి వారైననూ మోక్ష మొందగలరు.
గాన కార్తిక మాసము నందు వ్రతములు , పురాణ శ్రవణములు చేసిన వారలిహపర సుఖములు పొంద గలరు.

Karthika Puranam – Chapter 10 | The Story of Ajamil’s Previous Birth
King Janaka once approached Sage Vashishta and inquired with devotion:
“O revered sage! Who is this Ajamil? What was his previous birth like? What sins did he commit in his past life? And after the messengers of Lord Vishnu took him to Vaikuntha, what transpired thereafter? Please narrate the details.”
Hearing this, the sage, with compassion, addressed King Janaka:
*”O King! After Ajamil was taken to Vaikuntha by the messengers of Lord Vishnu, Yama’s servants approached me in fear and said:
‘O Lord! We went to bring Ajamil as per our duty, but the messengers of Vishnu arrived there and argued with us. They carried Ajamil in their vimana (celestial vehicle) to Vaikuntha. We could not act further, and thus we have come in confusion and fear.’
I then asked them, ‘What exactly happened? Was there a special reason for this occurrence?’”*
Through his divine vision, Yama understood the details of Ajamil’s previous life and said:
“Ah! This is the matter! In his past life, Ajamil constantly meditated on and remembered ‘Narayana’ (Lord Vishnu) even in his final moments. Therefore, the messengers of Vishnu arrived and took him to Vaikuntha.”
Indeed, those who remember the holy name of Hari at the time of death, knowingly or unknowingly, attain Vaikuntha. Hence, Ajamil received the grace of Vaikuntha.
The Story of Ajamil’s Previous Life
In his previous birth, Ajamil was a temple priest in a Shiva temple in Maharashtra. Despite possessing extraordinary beauty, wealth, and strength, he became arrogant. He neglected his duties of worship and temple service, misused the temple’s wealth, and indulged in immoral activities, wandering freely with companions. At times, he even disrespected the deity in the temple.
He had a secret illicit relationship with a Brahmin woman. She too, being beautiful, wandered for alms while her husband was away. One day, she asked Ajamil to prepare food for her. Ajamil, negligent and lazy, refused even to fetch water for washing her feet. Enraged, she struck him with a stick, expelled him from the house, and closed the doors.
Feeling scorned, Ajamil left the house in frustration. The woman, realizing the gravity of her actions, regretted expelling her husband and, with remorse, sent a servant to bring him back. Over time, the couple reconciled, and he resumed proper conduct.
Later, the priest suffered from a severe illness and died. Through the consequences of his past deeds and the merit of worship, he was reborn as a Brahmin child. This child, Ajamil, ultimately remembered ‘Narayana’ at the time of death and was taken to Vaikuntha. The woman involved in his past life succumbed to disease and passed away.
Spiritual Moral and Significance
- Pure-hearted meditation on Lord Hari, performing dharmic deeds, listening to the stories of Vishnu, and observing the holy rituals of the month of Karthika purify even those who have committed sins.
- Those who undertake fasts, observe vratams, and engage in Purana recitations during Karthika month enjoy divine blessings and spiritual liberation.
Thus concludes the tenth chapter of the Skanda Purana, as narrated by Sage Vashishta on the greatness of the month of Karthika.
