🌿కురుక్షేత్ర సంగ్రామం ముగిసింది. యుద్ధంలో మరణించిన వీరులందరూ వారి వారి పాపపుణ్యాల ఆధారంగా స్వర్గ నరకాలకు చేరుకున్నారు.
🌸వారిలో అత్యంత దానశీలిగా పేరు పొందిన కర్ణుడు స్వర్గలోకానికి వెళుతుండగా మార్గమధ్యంలో ఆకలిగా, దప్పికగా అనిపించింది.
🌿 సమీపంలో ఉన్న కొలనులోని నీటిని దోసిలిలోకి తీసుకుని నోటిముందుకు చేర్చుకుని ఆత్రంగా తాగబోయాడు. చిత్రంగా ఆ నీరు కాస్తా బంగారు ద్రవంగా మారి, తాగడానికి పనికిరాకుండా పోయింది.
🌸 ప్రయత్నించిన ప్రతిసారీ అంతే అయింది. ఈలోగా విపరీత మైన ఆకలి వేయడంతో కంటికి ఎదురుగా ఉన్న ఓ ఫలవృక్షాన్ని సమీపించి, చేతికి అందేంత దూరంలో ఉన్న ఓ పండును కోశాడు.
🌿మధురమైన వాసనలతో ఉన్న ఆ పండు ఆయన క్షుద్బాధను ఇనుమడింప జేయడంతో వెంటనే పండు కొరికాడు. పండు కాస్తా పంటికింద రాయిలా తగిలి నొప్పి కలిగింది.
🌸మరో పండు కోశాడు. మళ్ళీ అదే అనుభవం ఎదురయింది. ఏది తిన్నా, ఏది తాగబోయినా మొత్తం బంగారుమయంగా మారిపోతున్నాయి తప్పితే ఆకలి, దాహం తీరడం లేదు.
🌿 దాంతో కర్ణుడు తన ఆకలి దప్పులు తీరే మార్గం లేక నిరాశా నిస్పృహలతో ఒక చోట కూలబడిపోయాడు. అప్పుడు ‘‘కర్ణా! నీవు దానశీలిగా పేరొందావు.
🌸చేతికి ఎముక లేకుండా దానాలు చేశావు. అయితే బంగారం, వెండి, ధనం రూపేణా చేశావు గానీ కనీసం ఒక్కరికి కూడా అన్నం పెట్టి వారి ఆకలి తీర్చలేదు. అందువల్లే నీకీ పరిస్థితి ఏర్పడింది’’ అని అశరీరవాణి పలికింది.
🌿అప్పుడు గుర్తుకొచ్చింది కర్ణుడికి ఒక సందర్భంలో ఒక పేద బ్రాహ్మడు తనను ఆకలితో కడుపు నకనకలాడిపోతోంది మహారాజా! ముందు నాకింత అన్నం పెట్టించండి మహాప్రభో అని నోరు తెరిచి అడిగాడు కూడా!
🌸అయితే అపార ధనవంతుడను, అంగరాజ్యాధిపతిని అయిన నేను పేదసాదలకు అన్నం పెట్టి పంపితే, వారు నన్ను చులకనగా చూస్తారేమో, ఆ విషయం నలుగురికీ తెలిస్తే నవ్వుకుంటారేమో అని అహంకరించి, సేవకులతో సంచీడు బంగారు నాణేలను తెప్పించి,

🌿అతని వీపుమీద పెట్టించడంతో, ఆ బరువును మోయలేక అతను అక్కడే చతికిలబడటం, తాను తిరస్కారంగా చూసి, భటుల చేత గెంటించడం గుర్తుకొచ్చింది.

🌿 దాని పర్యవసానం ఇంత తీవ్రంగా ఉంటుందనుకోలేదు… బతికి ఉండగా చేయలేని అన్నదాన కార్యక్రమాన్ని ఇప్పుడు ఎలా అమలు పర చగలడు? కర్తవ్యం ఏమిటి? అని ఆలోచించగా తన తండ్రి అయిన సూర్యదేవుడు గుర్తుకొచ్చాడు.
🌸సూర్యుని వద్దకెళ్లి జరిగిన విషయమంతా వివరించి పరిపరివిధాల ప్రాధేయపడ్డాడు. సూర్యుడు తమ రాజైన మహేంద్రునికి విన్నవించాడు. చివరకు దేవతలంతా కలసి ఆలోచించుకుని కర్ణుడికి ఒక అపురూపమైన అవకాశమిచ్చారు.
🌿అదేమంటే, సశరీరంగా భూలోకానికెళ్లి అక్కడ ఆర్తులందరికీ అన్న సంతర్పణ చేసి తిరిగి రమ్మన్నారు. దాంతో కర్ణుడు భూలోకానికి భాద్రపద బహుళ పాడ్యమినాడు వెళ్లి, అన్న సంతర్పణ చేశాడు. పితరులకు తర్పణలు వదిలి తిరిగి భాద్రపద అమావాస్యనాడు స్వర్గానికెళ్లాడు.
🌸కర్ణుడు భూలోకంలో ఉన్న కాలానికే మహాలయ పక్షమని పేరు. ఎప్పుడైతే అన్నసమారాధనతో అందరి కడుపులూ నింపాడో అప్పుడే కర్ణుడికి కూడా కడుపు నిండిపోయింది.
🌿ఆకలి, దప్పిక ఆయనను ఎన్నడూ బాధించలేదు. ఆకలితో ఉన్నవాడికి అన్నం పెట్టి కడుపు నింపాలి కానీ డబ్బు, బంగారం దానం చేస్తే ప్రయోజనం ఏముంటుంది? అన్నం పెట్టి, ఆకలి తీర్చినవారిని అన్నదాతా సుఖీభవ అని నిండు మనసుతో ఆశీర్వదిస్తారు.
