If you have the G Suite legacy free edition, you need to upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription to keep your services. The G Suite legacy free edition will no longer be available starting July 1, 2022.

Upgrade to Google Workspace by May 1, 2022

To maintain your services and accounts, review the information below and upgrade by May 1, 2022. Upgrading to Google Workspace takes just a few steps with no disruption to your users. After you upgrade you can use your new subscription at no cost until at least July 1, 2022.

If you choose to wait, Google will begin upgrading subscriptions automatically on May 1, 2022. We will upgrade your organization to a new Google Workspace subscription based on the features you currently use.

To complete the upgrade, set up Google Workspace billing before July 1, 2022. If you don’t provide your payment information, your Google Workspace subscription will be suspended until you set up billing.

After 60 days in suspension, you will no longer have access to Google Workspace core services, such as Gmail, Calendar, and Meet. You may still retain access to additional Google services, such as YouTube and Google Photos. Enter a valid form of payment to restore your suspended account.

Step 1: Upgrade to a paid subscription of Google Workspace

  1. At the edition you want, click Switch.
  2. Review the impact this change will haveand thenclick Get started.
  3. Select a payment plan:

    • Flexible Plan—No long-term commitment, pay for the users you have each month, and add or remove users as needed.
    • Annual Plan (Monthly Payment)—Requires a 1-year contract, pay monthly for users committed upfront, and add users as needed. You can increase the number of users in the users needed field. The Annual Plan is not available when you downgrade to a lower-level edition.
  4. Click Checkout.
  5. Enter your billing informationand thenclick Place Order.
Step 2: Set up billing

When you self-upgrade to Google Workspace, you enter your billing information during signup. If we upgrade you automatically, after your upgrade you need to set up Google Workspace billing.

You need to set up billing before July 1, 2022. If you don’t provide your payment information, your subscription will be suspended until you set up billing.

Legacy free edition upgrade questions

Below are some common questions about upgrading from the G Suite legacy free edition.

How does the upgrade affect my current G Suite legacy free edition subscription?

Your current G Suite legacy free subscriptions and related services will continue to function as they do today, until you self-upgrade or we upgrade you automatically to one of the new editions.

We recommend you upgrade now to a Google Workspace edition that meets your needs. If you prefer, we will upgrade you automatically and seamlessly after May 1, 2022. To complete the upgrade and prevent your subscription from being suspended, you need to enter your billing information before July 1, 2022.

Can I keep my G Suite legacy free edition subscription?

No. All G Suite legacy free edition subscriptions must upgrade to a Google Workspace subscription. We recommend you upgrade to a Google Workspace edition that meets your needs. If you choose not to upgrade by May 1, 2022, we will automatically upgrade your organization to a recommended subscription.

What subscription will I upgrade to?

We will upgrade you to a Google Workspace subscription based on the features you currently use.

What will I be charged for Google Workspace if you upgrade me after May 1, 2022?

Your subscription will be put on the Flexible Plan and you won’t be charged until at least July 1, 2022. After that, you’ll be charged every month for each user in your organization. Monthly charges depend on your new Google Workspace subscription.

After I upgrade, can I cancel my Google Workspace subscription?

Yes. If you decide not to keep your Google Workspace subscription, you can cancel Google Workspace  at any time.

If I don’t want to upgrade to a paid subscription can I keep my data?

Yes. If your needs have changed and you don’t want to upgrade to a paid Google Workspace subscription, you can use the Data Export tool to export your organization’s data.

If the administrator left the company, can a user become an admin?

Yes. Current users can ask to become an administrator on the account by completing this form. Users will be required to prove domain registration ownership by creating a custom CNAME or TXT record. If the domain registration verification is successful and none of the existing administrators object, the user will be promoted to the super administrator role.
