Visited the construction site of BAPS temple in Abu Dhabi. Once built, it will be the first Traditional Stone Hindu Mandir in the Middle East. Glad to learn about the environmental friendly green foundation utilizing fly ash.

First Traditional Stone Hindu Mandir in the Middle East, iiQ8, Hindu Temple in UAE

Shri V. Muraleedharan, Minister of State for External Affairs of India, visited Expo 2020 and then the ongoing construction site of the BAPS Hindu Mandir, Abu Dhabi. At the site, he was greeted by Brahmavihari Swami, other swamis and the Mandir’s Board of Directors.
During his visit he observed the ongoing construction of the Mandir from the visitors’ viewing deck. He then witnessed the installation of an intricately carved marble pillar central to the final Mandir design.
During the site visit, he also viewed the ‘Rivers of Harmony’ exhibition. Through creative graphics and digital displays, the exhibition portrays global, national and personal harmony inspired and instilled by the making  of the BAPS Hindu Mandir.
The minister watched special videos on the Mandir’s timeline and community services, which highlighted the Covid-19 relief work by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha involving over 11,000 volunteers globally.
While symbolically watering a plant, the minister expressed, “This BAPS Hindu Mandir will be a symbol of the age-old philosophy of India –  Sanatana Dharma, uniting every religious, political and national philosophy through global harmony. All will be blessed by this historic effort that is being undertaken by the Swaminarayan Sanstha. I thank everybody, saints of the Sanstha, HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan of UAE and PM Shri Narendra Modi.”

What is a Mandir?

A Mandir is a Hindu place of worship which connects man with God. Believed to be a bridge between earth and heaven, its stone art and architecture, forms and carvings symbolise both the wonders of nature and the mysteries of the universe.


A Mandir is the divine home where God resides to bless and inspire the faithful. In the words of His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the inspirer of this Mandir, “a Mandir is a place of paramount peace” – where the mind becomes still and feels the Divine.

Apart from preserving art, culture and spiritual values, a Mandir is also a centre of selfless humanitarian services that support and sustain the social and emotional needs of humanity at large.

In addition to the universal inspirations provided by the more than 1,200 BAPS mandirs around the world, the BAPS Hindu Mandir in Abu Dhabi hopes to:

Mandir Design and Construction

The BAPS Hindu Mandir at Abu Dhabi will be a unique architectural feat, built according to the ancient Hindu shilpashastras (Sanskrit scriptures of architecture).


Entirely sculpted from stone, every design and feature of the Mandir – from foundations to flags, pillars to pinnacles – is inspired by nature and identifies with the body of the divine. Every corner and crevice will be intricately hand-carved by hundreds of artisans in India. Once ready and numbered, thousands of such stone pieces will be shipped to the UAE and assembled on site like a giant 3D jigsaw puzzle. This magnificent Mandir shall be a marvel of seven spires and five ornate domes that we hope will serve the UAE and the world for millennia to come.
