పూర్వం ఇద్దరు రాజులు యుద్ధానికి దిగారు.

ఓడిన రాజు తన రాజ్యాన్ని వీడి అడవుల్లోకి పారిపోయాడు. అక్కడే ఆధ్యాత్మిక చింతనతో కాలం గడుపుతున్నాడు.

గెలిచిన రాజు ఆ ఉత్సాహంతో యజ్ఞం తలపెట్టాడు. అనుకోకుండా అక్కడ యాగధేనువు మరణించింది. అది అశుభ సూచన. యజ్ఞాన్ని ఎలా పూర్తి చేయాలో తెలియక ఆ రాజు తికమక పడ్డాడు. నగర పురోహితుల్ని సంప్రదిస్తే- ఆ ధర్మసూక్ష్మం తెలిసినవాడు ఓడిపోయిన రాజేనని తేలింది.

ధర్మసంకటం నుంచి గట్టెక్కించగలవాడు ఆయనేనని నిశ్చయమైంది. గెలిచిన రాజు ఏమాత్రం సందేహించకుండా ఓడిన రాజు వద్దకు వెళ్లి, యజ్ఞాన్ని పరిపూర్తి చేయాలని అర్థించాడు. ఆయనా ఏ శషభిషలకు తావు లేకుండా ధర్మనిర్ణయం కోసం ముందుకొచ్చాడు.

శత్రువుకు సహకరించాడు. ఆ ఇద్దరు రాజులూ ఆర్షధర్మ నిర్వహణ విషయంలో అహంకారాల్ని త్యజించారు.

వారి కథే – శ్రీ కృష్ణదేవరాయల ‘ఆముక్తమాల్యద’ లోని ‘ఖాండిక్య కేశిధ్వజోపాఖ్యానం’ సారాంశం.

 

సమాజం అనే ధర్మసౌధం పటిష్ఠంగా నిలిచేందుకు భారతీయ ప్రాచీన సాహిత్యం ఎంతగా తోడ్పడిందో, ఈ ఉదాహరణ చూస్తే ఇట్టే అర్థమవుతుంది.

 

ఈ కథలో ఓడిన రాజు ఖాండిక్యుడు, గెలిచినవాడు కేశిధ్వజుడు. ఈ కథ చివర గొప్ప మలుపు ఒకటుంది.

 

తన యజ్ఞ సంపూర్తికి సహకరించిన ఖాండిక్యుడికి గురుదక్షిణగా ఏది కావాలన్నా ఇస్తానని కేశిధ్వజుడు ప్రకటిస్తాడు. అది సంప్రదాయం.

ఓడిన రాజుకు ఓర్మి ఎంత ప్రధానమో- గెలిచిన రాజుకు సంయమనం, ధర్మ సంప్రదాయ పరిరక్షణ అంతే అవసరం.

 

ఈ అవకాశాన్ని చేజిక్కించుకున్న ఖాండిక్యుడు తాను కోల్పోయిన రాజ్యం తిరిగి గురుదక్షిణగా కావాలన్నా ఇచ్చేయడానికి కేశిధ్వజుడు సిద్ధపడతాడు.

 

ఇక్కడే ఓ చిత్రం చోటుచేసుకుంటుంది.

రాజ్య సంపద అయాచితంగా వచ్చిపడుతున్నా ఖాండిక్యుడు కాదంటాడు తనకు బ్రహ్మ జ్ఞానాన్ని బోధించాలని, అదే కేశిధ్వజుడి నుంచి తాను కోరుకునే గురుదక్షిణ అని ప్రకటిస్తాడు.

 

ఖాండిక్యుడి నిర్ణయం కేశిధ్వజుణ్ని విస్మయానికి గురిచేస్తుంది. ఆయన ఆలోచన ఏమిటో తెలుసుకోవాలని అనిపిస్తుంది.

అప్పుడు ఖాండిక్యుడు అంటాడు- ‘రాజ్యభోగాలు కేవలం భౌతిక సంపదలు.

వాటిని కష్టంతో, శారీరక శ్రమతో సాధించుకోవాలి. అంతేగాని, అవి అయాచితంగా లభించాలని కోరుకోకూడదు.
కష్టపడి సాధిస్తేనే, వాటి విలువ తెలుస్తుంది.

నా కంటే బలవంతుడి చేతిలో ఓడిపోయాను. అందులో సిగ్గు పడాల్సింది ఏముంటుంది? తిరిగి పుంజుకొని ధర్మమార్గంలో, క్షాత్రంతో నా రాజ్యాన్ని నేను తిరిగి చేజిక్కించుకోవాలి. అది ఒప్పుతుంది గాని, దొడ్డిదారిన పొందితే పాపమవుతుంది’ అని బదులిస్తాడు ఖాండిక్యుడు.

ఇలాంటి కథల్ని పిల్లలకు పాఠ్యాంశాలుగా నిర్ణయిస్తే, వారి బాల్యాన్ని అవి ధార్మిక పథంలోకి నడిపిస్తాయి. వ్యక్తిత్వ వికాసానికి దోహదం చేస్తాయి.

ఉచితాల కోసం తాపత్రయ పడకుండా ఆపుతాయి. ఉచితానుచిత జ్ఞానాన్ని వారికి అలవరుస్తాయి. ఆముక్తమాల్యదలోని ఖాండిక్య కేశిధ్వజోపాఖ్యానం – ఆ కావ్యానికి గుండెకాయ వంటిదని ప్రశస్తి రావడానికి ముఖ్య కారణాలేమిటి? ఆ కథలోని ధార్మిక నేపథ్యం, ప్రబోధ గుణం.

గెలుపు ఓటముల విషయంలో, కర్తవ్య నిర్వహణలో, అయాచిత అవకాశాల తిరస్కరణలో ప్రతిఫలించిన ధర్మస్వరూపమే- భారతీయతకు వన్నెలద్దుతూ వచ్చింది.

A Moral Story: Learning True Values

Long ago, there were two kings who went to war.
One king won, and the other king lost.

The king who lost the war left his kingdom and ran away into the forest.
There, he lived a peaceful life, thinking about God and truth.

The king who won the war was very happy.
He decided to perform a holy ritual (yagna).
But during the ritual, a sacred cow died by accident.
This was a bad sign.

The winning king became worried.
He did not know how to complete the ritual correctly.
He asked many priests for advice.

The priests said,
“Only the lost king knows the right answer. He understands true duty and truth.”

So the winning king went to the lost king without pride and asked for help.
The lost king also helped him without hatred, even though they were enemies.

Both kings left their ego behind and followed the path of dharma (right conduct).

This story comes from the famous book “Amuktamalyada” written by Sri Krishnadevaraya.

The lost king was named Khandikya,
and the winning king was named Keshidhwaja.

The Big Twist in the Story

After the ritual was completed,
King Keshidhwaja said to Khandikya:

“I will give you anything you want as a gift. This is my duty.”

Khandikya could have asked for his lost kingdom.
Keshidhwaja was ready to give it back.

But Khandikya said,
“I do not want the kingdom.
Please teach me true knowledge (Brahma Jnana).”

Everyone was surprised!

Then Khandikya explained:

“Kingdoms and riches are material things.
They must be earned through hard work, not taken for free.
Only when we work hard do we understand their value.

I lost my kingdom to a stronger king.
There is no shame in that.
I must work hard, follow the right path,
and win back my kingdom honestly.

Taking it without effort is wrong.”

Moral of the Story

• True greatness is not pride, but humility
• Help others, even enemies, when it is the right thing to do
• Do not take things without earning them
• Hard work gives real value
• Knowledge and good character are more important than wealth

Stories like this teach children good values,
help them grow into honest and strong people,
and guide them to live a righteous life.
