Viswarupa Sandarshana Yogam (The Vision of the Universal Form) – Chapter 11, Bhagavad Gita (Professional & Devotional English Translation)

Arjuna:
“O Lord! Out of compassion, You have revealed to me this supreme secret of divine knowledge, and my delusion has vanished. You have described Your infinite glory and supreme power with great mercy. Now, O Supreme Being, I long to see Your divine universal form. If You deem me worthy, please bless me with that vision.”

Lord Sri Krishna:
“Behold, O Arjuna, My infinite, divine form—multicolored and wondrous, adorned with countless faces, eyes, and marvels that have never been seen before. Within Me, behold the Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, and all celestial beings. Whatever you wish to see, see it now within Me. Yet, with your mortal eyes, you cannot perceive this vision. Therefore, I grant you divine sight—behold My cosmic glory.”

Sanjaya:
“O King Dhritarashtra! Then Sri Krishna, the Lord of Yoga, revealed His divine universal form to Arjuna—a form of countless faces, eyes, and celestial ornaments, resplendent and overwhelming, shining with the brilliance of a thousand suns rising at once in the sky.”

In that boundless cosmic form, Arjuna beheld the entire universe gathered within a single part of the Supreme Being’s body.

Overwhelmed with wonder and reverence, his body trembling with devotion, Arjuna bowed down with folded hands and spoke:

Arjuna:
“O Supreme Lord of the Universe! I behold within You all gods, all living beings, Lord Brahma seated on the lotus, and all the sages and celestial beings. I see You with infinite arms, countless mouths and eyes, and forms of unimaginable radiance, shining like blazing suns and consuming fires.

You are the Supreme Reality, the ultimate shelter of all creation, the eternal protector of righteousness. Truly, You are the imperishable, infinite Supreme Brahman.

 

I see You without beginning, middle, or end, infinite in power, with countless arms. Your eyes are the sun and the moon, and Your mouth is a blazing fire consuming all creation. The entire universe trembles before Your radiant, fiery brilliance.”

As Arjuna gazed upon that awe-inspiring form, all the worlds were filled with fear. The hosts of gods entered into Him; the great sages and perfected beings praised Him with folded hands, glorifying Him in hymns.

Arjuna continued:
“O Lord, seeing Your fierce and wondrous form with blazing eyes and flaming mouths, I am terrified. My mind trembles; I find no peace or courage within. All the sons of Dhritarashtra, along with Bhishma, Drona, Karna, and other great warriors, are rushing into Your dreadful mouths. Their heads are being crushed between Your terrible jaws, just as rivers flow helplessly into the ocean.

O Lord, the worlds are consumed in Your fiery mouths; all directions are burning with Your radiance. Who are You, O blazing one? Have mercy and reveal Your true purpose to me.”

Sri Krishna:
“I am Time, the great destroyer of worlds, come here to annihilate all beings. Even without your participation, all these warriors shall perish. Therefore, arise, O Arjuna! Engage in battle and be merely My instrument. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a prosperous kingdom. Those already slain by Me, you shall simply bring to completion. You will triumph.”

Arjuna:
“O Lord, hearing of Your glories, the entire world rejoices and sings Your praise. The demons flee in terror, and the hosts of perfected beings bow to You in reverence. Who would not worship You, O Great One—You who are the origin of Brahma, the eternal, all-knowing, infinite, and omnipresent Lord?

You are the Father of all creation—of beings movable and immovable. You are the fire, the wind, the moon, the sun, and the waters. My countless salutations to You from all sides!

O Krishna, O friend! Out of ignorance and affection, I have often addressed You casually as ‘O Krishna,’ ‘O Yadava,’ or ‘O Friend,’ without understanding Your greatness. Please forgive me. Just as a father forgives his son, a friend pardons his friend, or a lover overlooks the faults of the beloved, please forgive me.

O Lord, seeing this terrifying universal form, I am filled with fear. Please return to Your gentle form—the one with the crown, conch, discus, and mace.”

Sri Krishna:
“O Arjuna, out of compassion, I have shown you this supreme and radiant universal form, which none before you has ever seen. Not by the study of the Vedas, sacrifices, charity, or severe penance has this vision been attainable by anyone. Fear not, and behold My familiar human form once again.”

Then Sri Krishna revealed His gentle, gracious form once more.

Arjuna:
“Now my heart is at peace, O Lord. I am free from fear.”

Sri Krishna:
“This divine vision that you have seen, even the gods constantly long to behold. Not by study, sacrifice, gifts, or austerity can it be attained—but only through unwavering devotion.

He who performs all actions for My sake, who depends on Me, who is devoted to Me, free from attachment and malice toward all beings—such a devotee truly comes to Me.”
