Bhagavad Gita – Chapter 10: Vibhuti Yoga (The Yoga of Divine Manifestations)
Lord Krishna said:
Since you delight in hearing My words and seek your own good, listen now as I reveal more to you.
No one can comprehend My origin, for I am the source of all that exists. I am without beginning or end. Those who understand Me as the Supreme Lord of all worlds attain liberation.
All qualities and dualities—pleasure and pain, victory and defeat, good and evil—arise only through Me.
The great sages such as Sanaka, Sanandana, the seven rishis, and the fourteen Manus were all born through My will, and through them all living beings have come into existence.
Those who know My divine manifestations and My yoga (powers) become steadfast in devotion and spiritual discipline.
The wise, knowing Me as the source of all creation, fix their minds and lives upon Me, ever self-controlled, rejoicing and speaking constantly of My divine plays. They live in eternal bliss.
Lord Krishna continued:
To those who worship Me with love, I grant the knowledge by which they may reach Me. Out of compassion for them, I dwell within their intellect and dispel the darkness of ignorance with the radiant lamp of wisdom.
Arjuna said:
O Krishna, the sages, Vyasa, and You Yourself proclaim that You are the eternal, supreme spirit, the primal source of all. I too accept this truth.
O Lord, none but You can truly know Your divine nature. Tell me, how can I meditate upon You in all things? In what forms should I contemplate You? Please explain in detail.
Lord Krishna said:
Arjuna, My divine manifestations are infinite; it is impossible to describe them all. However, I shall declare to you the most glorious among them. Listen carefully:
I am the Self abiding in the hearts of all beings. Of the sun-gods, I am Vishnu; among the radiant lights, I am the Sun; among the Maruts (storm deities), I am Marichi; among the stars, I am the Moon.
Of the Vedas, I am the Sama Veda; among the gods, I am Indra; among the senses, I am the mind; among living beings, I am consciousness.
Among the Rudras, I am Shankara (Shiva); among the Yakshas and Rakshasas, I am Kubera; among the Vasus, I am Agni (Fire); among mountains, I am Meru; among priests, I am Brihaspati; among generals, I am Skanda (Kartikeya); among bodies of water, I am the ocean.
Among great sages, I am Bhrigu; in speech, I am the sacred syllable Om; among sacrifices, I am Japa Yajna (silent chanting of the holy name); among immovable things, I am the Himalayas; among trees, I am the sacred fig (Ashvattha).
Among divine sages, I am Narada; among celestial musicians, I am Chitraratha; among the perfected beings, I am Kapila; among horses, I am Ucchhaishravas; among elephants, I am Airavata; among men, I am the mighty king.
Among weapons, I am the thunderbolt; among cows, I am Kamadhenu; among causes of procreation, I am Kandarpa (the god of love); among serpents, I am Vasuki; among Nagas, I am Ananta; among water deities, I am Varuna; among ancestors, I am Aryama; among rulers, I am Yama.
Among demons, I am the devoted Prahlada; among beasts, I am the lion; among birds, I am Garuda; among purifiers, I am the wind; among warriors, I am Sri Rama; among aquatic beings, I am the crocodile; among rivers, I am the Ganga.
I am the beginning, the middle, and the end of all creation. I am the foundation of all reasoning and debate.
Among letters, I am the letter A; among compound words, I am the dual compound; I am the giver of the fruits of all actions.
I am death that devours all, and the source of all new beginnings. Among feminine powers, I am glory, prosperity, speech, memory, intelligence, steadfastness, and forgiveness.
Among hymns, I am the Brihat Sama; among poetic meters, I am the Gayatri; among months, I am Margashirsha; among seasons, I am spring.
Among deceitful practices, I am gambling; among the radiant, I am splendor itself; I am victory, effort, and the pure quality of goodness.
Among the Yadavas, I am Vasudeva; among the Pandavas, I am Arjuna; among sages, I am Vyasa; among poets, I am Shukracharya.
I am the policy of those who discipline; the statesmanship of those who conquer; among secrets, I am silence; among the wise, I am wisdom.
I am the seed of all beings; there is nothing—living or nonliving—that can exist without Me.
My divine manifestations are endless, Arjuna. What I have declared to you is but a summary.
Know that all beings that are glorious, prosperous, and powerful arise from only a spark of My splendor.
What need is there for all this detail?
Know that with but a single fragment of My being, I pervade and sustain the entire universe.
Thus ends the Tenth Chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita—The Yoga of Divine Glories (Vibhuti Yoga).
