Majority of coronavirus cases are amongst 16-44 age group, iiQ8

COVID-19: 61% of positive cases are Kuwaitis

The spokesman for Kuwait’s Ministry of Health, Dr Abdullah Al Sanad, revealed that 61 per cent of those infected with COVID-19 throughout the month of January were Kuwaitis.

While the Ministry has held a weekly press conference since the start of the pandemic, due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, Al Sanad announced it will be holding a press conference daily at 7pm (8pm UAE time) to keep the public informed. On Tuesday, Kuwait recorded 1,002 new COVID-19 cases and six deaths, making it one of the highest number of positive cases and deaths registered in a single day since the start of the pandemic.

Given the steep increase in cases, Kuwait has enforced several new measures from banning non-Kuwaitis from travelling to Kuwait for two weeks to closing down saloons and gyms for a month. In addition, the government is considering enforcing a curfew, if cases continue to rise. Weddings, public gatherings and funerals.

Al Sanad pointed out that the majority of the cases, 67.12 per cent, are among those who are between 16 to 44 years of age.

Several have stated that the rise in cases is due to the increase in weddings, public gatherings and funerals. The government has urged all citizens and residents to avoid hosting or attending any large social gatherings. As the number of cases increase, so does the number of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Currently, the occupancy rate is 15 per cent compared to last week, when it was 9 per cent.
