New Delhi, 15th June, 2023:
Law Commission of India issued notice to send suggestions on UCC
BIG BREAKING: The Law Commission of India has issued a notice to the people to send their suggestions on the Uniform Civil Code in the next 30 days.
My View on Uniform Civil Code:
In theory, the UCC would grant all people equal status regardless of the community to which they belong. It is not a novel idea, and India’s history contains precedents for it. All people have the right to equality under our constitution.
Many values on gender equality are prescribed in India’s cultural traditions and sacred texts. While we advance toward growth, we must also remember to look back and learn from the past. Women are mostly subjected to discrimination under current personal laws.

For instance, women sometimes do not have any inheritance rights at all, let alone equal inheritance rights. After independence, these rights have been attempted to be protected through ad hoc legislation like the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act of 2005.
Over the years, personal laws and fundamental rights have occasionally clashed, and a few of these cases have gone to court, frequently reigniting the discussion on the Uniform Civil Code.
Each community currently has vastly diverse personal rules that govern how things like marriage, inheritance, etc. are handled. Article 14 of the Constitution, which ensures equality before the law, is violated by this.
