How to Submit RTI Online request, Right To Information Online in India

Filing an RTI application can be time-consuming, expensive. Now, there’s a better way to file your RTI application: online. Here’s how. After you register with the RTI website, you will need to create a username and password. Once you’ve completed these steps, you will receive an activation code via email. You’ll need this code to access the dashboard.

The government of India has now enabled citizens to file their RTI (Right to Information) applications online. https://rtionline.gov.in/

  • Payment is made through a Credit card or Net banking. Rupees 10/- per application. The first appeal has no charges.
  • Citizens below the poverty line don’t have to pay any fee. However, the applicant must attach a copy of the certificate issued by the appropriate government and the application.
  • You will be updated on the status of your application on your cell phone and email.

How To Apply For RTI Online

  1. The Web Portal can be used by Indian citizens to file an RTI application online. It is also possible to pay in support of RTI applications online. First appeals may be filed online.
  2. An applicant who desires to obtain any information under the RTI Act can make a request through this Web Portal to the Ministries/Departments of Government of India.
  3. After clicking on “Submit Request” The applicant will be required to enter the required information on the webpage that will pop up. The fields are marked They are compulsory, while the rest are not mandatory.
  4. The content of the application could be written on the column that is prescribed.
  5. Presently, the content of applications that are uploaded in the required column is restricted to 3000 characters.
    The only alphabets that are A-Z numbers 9 and special characters . – _ ( ) / @ : & ? % is allowed for use in Text for RTI Request application.
  6. If an application has greater than 3000 characters it could be added as an attachment by using the column “Supporting Document”.
    Don’t upload your Aadhar Card and PAN Card or any other identification card for personal use. (Except BPL Card).
    The name of the PDF file should not contain any empty spaces.
  7. After filling out the initial page after which the applicant must click “Make Pay” to pay the fee prescribed.
  8. The applicant may pay the fee in these methods:
    (a) Internet banking;
    (b) Credit/debit card from Master/Visa;
    (c) Using RuPay Card.
  9. The cost for submitting an application is as per the RTI Rules, 2012.
  10. After payment is made the application is completed.
  11. If, after making the payment, the applicant did not receive the registration number, then the customer should wait for up to 24 hours, as the registration numbers will be generated following the reconciliation. Do not attempt to pay a second time. If it is not generated within 24-48 hours kindly send an e-mail at helprtionline-dopt@nic.in with transaction details.
  12. There is no RTI cost is required by any individual who is below the poverty level in accordance with the RTI Rules 2012. The applicant should provide a copy certification issued by the relevant government to prove this in addition to the application.
  13. After the submission of an application and a unique registration number will be issued. It could be used by the applicant for any further references.
  14. The application that is submitted via the Web Portal would reach electronically to the “Nodal Officer” of the relevant Ministry/Department and they would forward this RTI request electronically to the concerned CPIO.
  15. If there is an additional charge to cover the cost of providing details The CPIO will notify the applicant via this portal. This notification is accessible by the applicant in his/her Status Report or via an email notification.
  16. To appeal to the initial Appellate Authority person requesting an appeal is required to click “Submit First Appeal” and fill in the form which will open.
  17. The registration number on the original application should be used for a purpose of.
  18. In accordance with the RTI Act, no fee must be paid to appeal the first time.
  19. The applicant or the appellant must provide their mobile number in order to receive an alert via SMS.
  20. The status of the RTI application/first appeal that has been filed online is available to the applicant/appellant by clicking on “View the Status”.
  21. The requirements for filing for an RTI application and the first appeal, as well as the other rules regarding time limits exclusions, time limit, etc. The provisions within the RTI Act 2005 will remain in effect.

This is a good initiative by the Government of India to get transparency in the RTI process. Earlier, the applications were made in physical form and posted or handed delivered. There was no tracking number assigned, and therefore it wasn’t easy to track the status of the application.

Please do not file RTI applications through this portal for the public authorities under the State Governments, including Government of NCT Delhi. If filed, the application would be returned, without refund of amount.
