A bomb exploded on a popular pedestrian street in Istanbul Sunday, killing six people, wounding dozens and sending people fleeing as flames rose.
Footage posted online showed ambulances, fire trucks and police at the scene on Istiklal Avenue, a typically crowded thoroughfare popular with tourists and locals and lined with shops and restaurants. In one video, a loud bang could be heard and flames could be seen, as pedestrians turned and ran away. Social media users said shops were shuttered and the avenue closed down.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the blast a “treacherous attack” and said its perpetrators would be punished. In addition to the six dead, Erdogan said another 81 were wounded, according to information he received from the Istanbul governor.

His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah sent Sunday a cable to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to extend sincere condolences over the victims of the terrorist explosion in Istanbul earlier today which left six people dead and several others injured. In his cable, His Highness the Amir expressed Kuwait’s strong condemnation of “this sinful terror act which targeted innocent people in violation of all religious and human norms”. He prayed for God to bless souls of the victims and wished quick recovery of the wounded.
His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah sent Sunday a cable to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to offer sincere condolences over the victims of the Istanbul terrorist explosion which left six people dead and several others injured. In his cable, His Highness the Crown Prince prayed to God to bless the souls of the victims and wished the wounded swift recovery.
