पद्म पुराण के अनुसार, अयोध्या का राजा बनने के बाद एक दिन भगवान श्रीराम को विभीषण का विचार आया। उन्होंने सोचा कि, रावण की मृत्यु के बाद विभीषण किस तरह लंका का शासन कर रहे हैं, उन्हें कोई परेशानी तो नहीं है। जब श्रीराम ये सोच रहे थे, उसी समय वहां भरत भी आ गए।
भरत के पूछने पर श्रीराम उन्हें पूरी बात बताई। ऐसा विचार मन में आने पर श्रीराम लंका जाने की सोचते हैं। भरत भी उनके साथ जाने को तैयार हो जाते हैं। अयोध्या की रक्षा का भार लक्ष्मण को सौंपकर श्रीराम व भरत पुष्पक विमान पर सवार होकर लंका जाते हैं।
जब श्रीराम व भरत पुष्पक विमान से लंका जा रहे होते हैं, रास्ते में किष्किंधा नगरी आती है। श्रीराम व भरत थोड़ी देर वहां ठहरते हैं और सुग्रीव से अन्य वानरों से भी मिलते हैं। जब सुग्रीव को पता चलता है कि श्रीराम व भरत विभीषण से मिलने लंका जा रहे हैं, तो वे उनके साथ हो जाते हैं। रास्ते में श्रीराम भरत को वह पुल दिखाते हैं, जो वानरों व भालुओं ने समुद्र पर बनाया था।

श्रीराम तीन दिन तक लंका में ठहरते हैं और विभीषण को धर्म-अधर्म का ज्ञान देते हैं और कहते हैं कि तुम हमेशा धर्म पूर्वक इस नगर पर राज्य करना। जब श्रीराम पुन: अयोध्या जाने के लिए पुष्पक विमान पर बैठते हैं तो विभीषण उनसे कहता है कि- श्रीराम आपने जैसा मुझसे कहा है, ठीक उसी तरह मैं धर्म पूर्वक राज्य करूंगा। लेकिन इस सेतु (पुल) के मार्ग से जब मानव यहां आकर मुझे सताएंगे, उस स्थिति में मुझे क्या करना चाहिए। विभीषण के ऐसा कहने पर श्रीराम ने अपने बाणों से उस सेतु के दो टुकड़े कर दिए। फिर तीन भाग करके बीच का हिस्सा भी अपने बाणों से तोड़ दिया। इस तरह स्वयं श्रीराम ने ही रामसेतु तोड़ा था।
