India to Resume International Flights from 15th December 2021, iiQ8

India has allowed scheduled from December 15, with a majority of countries where Covid is in control.

The aviation ministry order issued on Friday has divided countries into three parts based on health ministry’s Covid analysis and accordingly allowed resumption of flights.

The 3 categories are as follows:
1) Countries not at risk: Flights as per bilateral air service agreements or pre-Covid times. These include the US and Canada, among others.

2) Countries at risk but with whom India has an air bubble agreement: Flights to be lowed at 75 per cent of pre-Covid times.

3) Countries at risk and with whom India does not have an air bubble: 50 per cent of pre-Covid times.

As of now, the health ministry’s list of countries at risk include: Countries in Europe including The United Kingdom; South Africa; Brazil; Bangladesh; Botswana; China; Mauritius; New Zealand; Zimbabwe and Singapore.

India has air bubbles with several of these countries like those in EU, UK and Mauritius. It remains to be seen if India also suspends entry of travellers from South Africa due to the new Covid strain found there and also in Hong Kong and Botswana. Some countries like Italy and UK and have suspended travel with South Africa.

The government had on Thursday asked states to do “rigorous screening and testing” of passengers coming from these places or after transiting through them. The government had earlier this week said that scheduled international flights could resume by the year-end.

It has weighed in the Covid situation very carefully before deciding on resumption of scheduled international flights that were suspended in March 2020.

Since last summer, international flights operate under air bubbles India has so far created with 31 countries. But the limited capacity has lad to exorbitant international fares.

On peak travel days now, one-way ticket often costs more than pre-pandemic return fares. International fares for this Christmas-New Year are extremely high.

The tourism industry has been requesting the government to open international flights to countries where Covid is in control and which mutually accept and recognise Indian vaccines and certification.
