ఒకనాడు ఆనందభట్టు అనే కవిపండితుడొకడు శ్రీకృష్ణదేవరాయల ఆస్థానమునకు వచ్చి “ప్రభూ! తిట్టుకవిత్వం చెప్పుటలో నాతో సరితూగగలవారి నెవ్వరినీ నేనెక్కడా యింతవరకూ జూడలేదు. మీరంగీకరించినచో మీ ఆస్థానమున నా కవిత్వమును ప్రదర్శించవలెనని మిక్కిలి కోరికగానున్నద”నెను.
రాయలవారికి ఆ కవిత్వముపట్ల ఆసక్తి లేకపోవుటచే అంగీకరింపక కవిగార్ని సభకురానీయకుండ ఊరకపంపుట కిష్టపడక తగిన బహుమానముల నిచ్చి పంపివేయుట మంచిదని తలచెను. ఊరక బహుమానము స్వీకరించుటకు ఆనందభట్టుకు యిష్టంలేక రాయలవద్ద ఈ క్రింది పద్యాన్ని చదివాడు.

రాయలవారి యనుజ్ఞలేనిదే మాట్లాడుట మర్యాదగాదని అప్పటివరకూ యూరకుండిన రామలింగడు దిగ్గునలేచి, ఈ క్రింది పద్యపాదమునిచ్చి ఆనందభట్టును పూరింపమన్నాడు.
“చూతు వెలుపుడాయటంచు సూక్తులు పలికెన్”
మంచి అర్ధముతో దానిని పూరింపలేక ఆలోచించుచూ ఆనందభట్టున్న సమయమున “ఆతులపడి”యనే పద్యాన్ని చదవగా అనందభట్టు ఆశ్చర్యము నొంది మరొక పద్యముతో రామలింగకవియొక్క ్రజ్ఞావిశేషములని బొగడి నిష్రమించాడు. రామలింగకవి యొక్క సమయస్స్ఫూర్తికీ, ప్రభుభక్తి పరాయణతకు ప్రభువు రాయలవారు మెచ్చుకొని అనేక విధముల బొగడి తగురీతిని సత్కరించాడు.

Once, a learned poet named Anandabhatta came to the court of Sri Krishnadevaraya and said,
“Your Highness! I have never seen anyone so far who can match me in composing satirical poetry. If you permit, I am eager to showcase my poetry at your court.”
Since the king was not particularly interested in the poetry, he thought it would be best not to formally accept the poet at the court. Instead, he decided to politely send him away with some gifts. Anandabhatta, not pleased to just receive gifts and leave, recited the following verse before the king:
“Oh! The greatness of a witty poet is not to be compared to ordinary satirical poetry. Whatever others may say, O noble king, Tenali Ramakrishna, the cleverest among poets, can display such mastery in the style of Ramakrishna that even the most accomplished can be outdone.”
An appropriate response from the king being necessary, Ramalinga, who had been waiting patiently until then, rose and responded with the following verse, honoring Anandabhatta:
“I have not spoken these words in haste; I have expressed them with due wisdom.”
Anandabhatta, contemplating the meaning of this verse, read another verse containing the praise of Ramalinga’s poetic skills. Astonished by Anandabhatta’s cleverness, the king appreciated the devotion, creativity, and wit of Ramalinga and honored him in many ways.
