Kuwait City, 30th March, 2021:

1 Million doses of Moderna vaccine pending approval, iiQ8

Country has so far received nine shipments of the Pfizer-BioNtech vaccine

In an effort to ramp up it’s vaccination campaign, Kuwait’s Central Agency for Public tenders has approved the Ministry of Health’s request to purchase one million doses of the Moderna vaccine, local media reported.

The agreement is not final as the Ministry of Health is still waiting for the final approval from the state’s Audit Bureau. If approved, the value of the contract will be worth 12 million Kuwaiti dinars. The decision to supply the Moderna vaccines comes as Kuwait is working towards vaccinating 70 per cent of the country’s population.
To date, of the one million residents and citizens that pre-registered for the COVID-19 vaccines around 500,000 residents and citizens have received at least the first jab.

Vaccine updates
So far, only the US Pfizer-BioNTech and the UK Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines have been approved by Kuwait’s Ministry of Health. Since Kuwait received its first shipment of the Pfizer vaccine at the end of December, Kuwait has received a total of nine batches with the 10th shipment expecting to arrive in a few days.

As for the Oxford vaccine, only one shipment has arrived in Kuwait but the second one is expected to be in Kuwait by the end of the week.

As for approval of new vaccines, it is expected that the COVID-19 vaccination committee at the Ministry of Health will review the results from Johnson and Johnson vaccine trials and will authorize it for emergency use soon.
