The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scotched rumours that Indian expatriates can cast their votes online in the upcoming Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) elections due to be held soon. The news ticker on the ECI website made a clear clarification asking NRIs to be wary of fake news on social media informing that “those who hold Indian passport, can now vote online for 2019 elections.
The Election Commission filed a complaint with the Delhi Police on Friday, asking it to track down those spreading “fake news” that NRIs can cast their vote online in the Lok Sabha elections due in April-May.
There is no online voting facility for any category of voter. Overseas Indians may submit applications for enrollment in form 6A online at nvsp.in or by using the Voter helpline mobile app. To cast the vote on the date of the poll, an overseas elector may come to his designated polling station with his passport as document for identification,” it stated.
