Chali Kalam (Winter) – A Telugu Story
How Winter Began
In the earliest days of this world, there was always darkness, and there was always warmth. All the animals in this warm, dark world lived happily… well, almost all. There was one little creature, a young coyote, who was often sad. Poor thing, it wasn’t very good at hunting.
One day, the coyote saw a clever rabbit. Impressed by the rabbit’s intelligence in hunting, the coyote befriended it, hoping to get some food along the way. That evening, the rabbit managed to catch forty-four young birds, while the coyote didn’t even catch a single one!
The coyote felt embarrassed and a little frustrated. “Oh, it’s so dark! How can I ever find anything in this darkness? Do you know a place with some light?” the coyote asked the rabbit.
The rabbit said, “Come with me,” and led the coyote to a distant place. There, some humans of the Kachin tribe were performing traditional dances.
The rabbit explained, “The Kachin people are very powerful. See, they keep light in two boxes—one big, one small. In the big box is a glowing ball called the ‘Sun.’ Whenever they need more light, they use it. The rabbit and the coyote carefully sneaked closer, hiding behind the bushes. After the Kachin people grew tired from dancing and fell asleep, the rabbit picked up the big box and soared into the sky, while the coyote ran after it on the ground.
After a while, the coyote shouted, “Hey! Carrying that heavy box so high for so long will tire you! Let me carry it for a while.” The rabbit handed over the box and warned, “Be careful! Don’t do anything reckless!”
The coyote, slowed down by the weight, took careful steps while the rabbit flew slightly ahead. Its curiosity soon got the better of it. “Just a little peek inside the box… I must see how much light is inside!”
The coyote opened the box… not realizing that the rabbit had already combined both the Sun and Moon into the large box! As soon as the lid opened, both the Sun and Moon sprang out. The coyote squinted at the bright light and almost fainted! Instantly, the Sun and Moon shot up into the sky.
The rabbit tried to stop them from flying away, but it was too late. The Sun moved far away from the Earth, while the Moon stayed relatively close. As the Moon’s cool light reached the Earth, everything began to chill. The warmth disappeared, a shiver spread across the land, and winter arrived. Plants curled up, snow began to fall, and all the animals rushed to find shelter.
The rabbit scolded the coyote, “Oh, you mischievous coyote! Because of you, the Sun and Moon escaped, and now this harsh winter has come upon us!” But the coyote could do nothing; it was too late.
And that is how winter came to be—it has returned every year since then.
