Oman gratuity calculator

Work out your Oman end-of-service gratuity under Royal Decree 53/2023 — including the 2023 rule change that means your service before and after 31 July 2023 is calculated using two different formulas.

Enter your basic monthly salary.
Enter the date you started work.
Enter your last working day, after your start date.
Estimated total gratuity
OMR 0.000
Total years of service
Old-law portion (service before 31 Jul 2023)
New-law portion (service from 31 Jul 2023)

Both portions are currently paid by the same employer as one settlement — Oman hasn't moved to a separate fund the way Bahrain has, at least not yet.

Oman gratuity generally requires at least one year of continuous service, though some recent reporting suggests this threshold may have been removed. If you're under a year, confirm directly with the Ministry of Labour rather than assuming either way.
Omani nationals are generally covered by the Social Protection Fund's pension system rather than this gratuity, which mainly applies to expatriates. Confirm your specific situation with the Ministry of Labour if you're a national.
Government and civil service employees follow separate rules, not this Labour Law gratuity system. This estimate does not apply to you.

How Oman gratuity is actually calculated

End-of-service gratuity in Oman comes from Article 61 of the Labour Law, enforced by the Ministry of Labour. Royal Decree 53/2023 changed the formula significantly, effective 31 July 2023 — and critically, the change wasn't retroactive. If you were already employed before that date and are still working now, your gratuity has to be calculated in two separate pieces:

  • For service before 31 July 2023: the old tiered formula applies — 15 days' basic salary per year for your first 3 years, then 30 days' (a full month's) basic salary per year after that.
  • For service from 31 July 2023 onward: the new formula applies — a flat one full month's basic salary for every year, no tiers at all.

Unlike Bahrain, which moved part of its system to a separate government-administered fund in 2024, both pieces here are still owed by the same employer, added together into one final settlement. There is a further reform coming — a 9%-of-salary savings scheme that will eventually replace this gratuity system entirely — but its rollout has been formally postponed twice and is now scheduled for 19 July 2027, so as of today, the dual-formula system above is what actually applies.

As with the other Gulf countries, this is based on your last basic salary only — allowances are excluded.

The full formula, step by step

Old formula — service before 31 July 2023

Years 1–3 = daily wage × 15 × years (up to 3)
Year 4 onward = daily wage × 30 × years beyond 3

New formula — service from 31 July 2023

Gratuity = 1 × monthly salary × years served from 31 July 2023 onward

This portion doesn't tier at all — every year from the cutoff date onward is worth the same flat month's salary, regardless of how long you'd already worked before the cutoff.

Prorating a partial year

Fractional years are prorated within whichever formula applies to that segment of your service, the same way as Saudi Arabia's calculation.

Resignation vs termination

Unlike Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Oman's law doesn't reduce gratuity for voluntary resignation. Whether you resign, your contract expires, or you're terminated outside of summary-dismissal grounds, you're entitled to the full pro-rata amount under both formulas. The one exception is summary dismissal for serious misconduct under Article 41, which can result in zero entitlement — a specific legal scenario worth confirming directly with the Ministry of Labour rather than relying on any calculator.

Special cases the standard formula doesn't cover

Omani nationals

Omani nationals are generally covered by the Social Protection Fund's pension and social insurance system rather than this gratuity, which mainly applies to expatriate employees. Confirm your specific situation with the Ministry of Labour if you're a national.

Government and civil service employees

If you're employed directly by an Omani government body, your end-of-service terms follow separate civil service rules, not Article 61 of the Labour Law. This page doesn't apply to you.

The upcoming savings scheme

A future reform will eventually replace this entire gratuity system with a funded savings account (9% of basic salary contributed by the employer), similar in spirit to Bahrain's 2024 change. It's been postponed twice already — most recently to 19 July 2027 — so it isn't affecting anyone's entitlement yet, but it's worth watching if you plan to stay in Oman past that date.

What to actually do with your gratuity

If you're an Indian professional in Oman, your gratuity payout is often one of the largest single sums you'll receive during your time there — what you do with it in the weeks after matters more than most people plan for.

  • Oman has no personal income tax, so your gratuity isn't taxed there. Whether you need to declare it in India depends on your residency status — worth checking with a tax advisor if the amount is significant.
  • How you send it to India changes what you keep. Bank transfer, exchange houses, and remittance apps all quote different rates for the same amount — for a large one-off transfer, the gap between the best and worst option is often real money.
  • If you're not spending it immediately, an NRE or FCNR deposit account is a common option for returning or long-staying NRIs to look into before parking it in a regular savings account.

Frequently asked questions

How much gratuity will I get in Oman?

It depends on when your service falls. Before 31 July 2023: 15 days' salary per year for your first 3 years, then 30 days' per year after. From 31 July 2023 onward: a flat one month's salary per year. Use either calculator on this page for your specific numbers.

Why does my gratuity use two different formulas?

Royal Decree 53/2023 changed the gratuity formula effective 31 July 2023, but the change wasn't retroactive. If you were already employed before that date, your service is split: the old tiered formula applies to the portion before the cutoff, and the new flat formula applies to everything after.

Do I claim this from my employer or the government?

Currently, both portions are owed directly by your employer as one combined settlement. Unlike Bahrain, Oman hasn't moved any part of this to a separate government-administered fund — though a future savings scheme reform is planned, currently scheduled for 19 July 2027.

Does resigning reduce my gratuity in Oman?

No. Unlike Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Oman's law doesn't reduce gratuity for voluntary resignation — you're entitled to the full pro-rata amount whether you resign, your contract expires, or you're terminated outside of summary-dismissal grounds.

Can I lose my gratuity entirely?

Possibly, if you're summarily dismissed for serious misconduct under Article 41. That's a specific legal scenario a general calculator shouldn't estimate — get direct guidance from the Ministry of Labour if you believe this applies to you.

What if I've worked less than a year?

Most sources say there's generally no statutory gratuity entitlement under a year of continuous service, though some recent reporting suggests this threshold may have changed. Confirm directly with the Ministry of Labour if this affects you.

Is gratuity calculated on my basic salary or my total package?

Basic salary only. Housing, transport, and other allowances are excluded.

Does this apply to Omani nationals?

Not usually. Omani nationals are generally covered by the Social Protection Fund's pension system instead, since this gratuity mainly applies to expatriate employees.

Is my Oman gratuity taxed?

Oman has no personal income tax, so gratuity isn't taxed there. Whether it needs to be declared in India depends on your residency status — check with a tax advisor if the amount is significant.
